Shadow Minister for Police Mike Gallacher today said he welcomed any initiative to bring down the assault rate in NSW, however he is angered that this Government is only now taking the NSW assault crisis seriously because an election is on the horizon.

“For the past 11 years assault rates in NSW have soared under the NSW Labor Government,” Mr Gallacher said

“The Government has known about the soaring assault rate in NSW but has sat idle and done nothing to tackle this serious issue.

“NSW Officers do a fantastic job but this Government has failed to provide enough resources so that officers can get the job done.

Under the NSW Labor Government assault rates have soared:

• Assault: up 82.6%
• Sexual Assault: up 88.5%
• Indecent Assault: 32.6%

“Even more disturbing is how this Government has failed to pay attention to clear up rates for serious crimes in NSW.

“It is nothing short of a disgrace that less than a quarter of investigations of sexual assaults reported to Police are not resolved within 3 months.

“Furthermore, less than a third of Indecent Assaults in NSW are cleared within 3 months of reporting.

“This Government has sat on its hands and done nothing, and after 11 years enough is enough.

“The people of NSW want a Government that delivers solutions and results, something this Government cannot do,” Mr Gallacher concluded.
