Haiti, Liberalism and America
By Bill O'Reilly
A terrible earthquake, as you know, has crushed the Caribbean nation of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Reports say thousands are dead, and this beleaguered nation may completely collapse.

The question is: How much should the world do to save Haiti?

Now some conservative commentators pointed out it took President Obama three days to talk about the Christmas Day terror incident, but just hours to address the disaster in Haiti.

"Talking Points" believes the president should have reacted quicker to the underwear bomber, but it is certainly appropriate for Mr. Obama to address Haiti quickly. The United States is a noble nation, and the world needs to hear that over and over and over. Already the U.S. Coast Guard is saving lives in Haiti, and America will respond generously to this devastation. We always do. Always.

Now as far as Haiti is concerned, the USA has given that country more than $1 billion over the past five years. Compare that to the World Bank, which has donated about $300 million over the same time. It is clear America is very concerned about the world's poor, and "Talking Points" would like to know how much money Russia and China have donated.

I myself donate money to the Haitian Health Foundation run by a Connecticut patriot, Dr. Jerry Lowney. I give the money directly to the doctor because I know if I send it to the island, Haitian authorities will most likely steal it.

And therein lies the problem with Haiti: massive corruption.

There are nine million Haitians on the island, so there's enough aid to provide for all of them. The nation could be a tourist mecca. It is rich in folklore and culture, including voodoo. It has the Caribbean Sea and very nice people. But there is little tourism in Haiti.

My travels there have been illuminating. Only half the population can read and write. Unemployment's more than 50 percent. Most Haitians live on less than $2 a day. No matter how much charity is given, no matter how many good intentions there are, Haiti will remain chaotic until discipline is imposed.

Many liberals don't want to hear that. They believe that nanny state can provide, but it can't. No society will prosper unless there are rules of conduct, mandatory education and fairness by those in power. None of that happens in Haiti. And so the USA will once again pour millions into that country, much of which will be stolen.

Once again, we will do more than anyone else on the planet, and one year from today Haiti will be just as bad as it is right now.

Rudd opens the door for genuine security threats
Piers Akerman
KEVIN Rudd has shown he has absolutely no credibility on border security and the war on terror by insisting that Tamil refugees deemed to be a security threat be brought to Australia. - I think that many boat people are desperate, and many are peace loving. However this cold and heartless policy of Rudd’s will see half of all such migrants (yes, often economic refugees) die in their attempt to come to Australia. Rudd’s policy is weak and dangerous and inefficient. It undermines the UN’s attempt to process refugees. It is an expensive failure of Rudd’s. And, Piers is correct to label it as a security risk. I have friends who were refugees and their lives may well be at risk because Rudd wants to be popular and doesn’t care who he hurts or kills in this attempt. Not long ago some Sri Lankans were assaulted in Sydney with acid poured on their faces and down their throats by Sri Lankan separatists. While normal UN processing exposes Australia to such dangers, Rudd’s policy is much much worse. I want refugees to come to Australia and find refuge .. including refuge from craven characters as which run the ALP. - ed.
Curious replied DD Ball- Your comment:
“Not long ago some Sri Lankans were assaulted in Sydney with acid poured on their faces and down their throats by Sri Lankan separatists.”
This unprovoked violent criminal attack actually happened in Sydney and was reported briefly in the media but has this case been in the NSW court system or has it been buried for political reasons? Nothing has been heard of since.

Were the perpetrators deported back to Sri Lanka only to arrive back on boats without identity papers?

Is the victim/victims still alive? Were the victims paid compensation? Who paid the compensation - the taxpayers?
Curious, The event happened on 18th May 2009. One man was charged with the group invasion on 1st July 2009.
Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has admitted recent attacks on students in Sydney and Melbourne may have been racially motivated.” - SMH, 1st July.
I imagine because it is before the courts we will hear no more reports until the attackers are exonerated and Smith is carpeted for his foolish outburst by Rudd.- ed

PERVERT FOR PEACE
Tim Blair
Scott Ritter – hero, patriot and peace-wager – may have changed his views once or twice about Iraq, but on certain other issues he remains remarkably consistent:
A former chief United Nations weapons inspector is accused of contacting what he thought was a 15-year-old girl in an Internet chat room, engaging in a sexual conversation and showing himself masturbating on a Web camera.

Scott Ritter of Delmar, N.Y., who served as chief U.N. weapons inspector in Iraq from 1991-98 and who was an outspoken critic of the second Bush administration in the run-up to the war in Iraq, is accused of contacting what turned out to be a Barrett Township police officer posing undercover as a teen girl …

The online conversation occurred in February 2009 …
This is the third time that Ritter – a weapon of masturbation, if you will – has been caught prowling for underage girls. Whatever happened to that ferocious American gun culture we’re always hearing so much about?

(Via Mr Bingley)

UPDATE. Ritter’s 15-year-old online playpal was not only a cop, she was a dude. Way to inspect those weapons, peace-wager.

PACT WITH GAIA
Tim Blair
Actor Danny Glover believes that the Haitian earthquake was caused by climate change and global warming:

Says Glover: “When we see what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, this is the response, this is what happens, you know what I’m sayin’?” His obscene opinion would be bigger news if Glover had – in the manner of others – idiotically blamed a less-fashionable deity.

BAD COP
Tim Blair
James Lileks:
COPS remains one of the most interesting shows on TV; this weekend I saw something you rarely see: a bona-fide jerk of a policeman. There are many levels of jerkhood, of course; someone overly polite and mockingly solicitous could be regarded as a jerk, although it’s more a cheerful WHATEVER, FELON, I’M SLEEPING IN MY OWN BED TONIGHT attitude you’d probably get after filing liars in your back seat for a decade. This policeman was just wired tight from the git-go, and was pre-steamed and highly peeved at a fellow he stopped for jaywalking. Everything he did under the circumstances was correct, including the seemingly callous command to the jaywalker’s parents to GO AWAY. The jaywalker’s ID was hinky, the “parents” appeared out of a motel; who knows? Couldn’t fault him for anything, except that you got the feeling every encounter with civilians was like this.

It’s the only reality show I ever watched, and it never fails to fascinate. The lies, the pleas, the crimes, the disbelief, the swift judgment – it’s like a live feed from the Pearly Gates.
And it still has television’s best theme music.

PROFIT MADE
Tim Blair
The new green economy pays off at last:
My Emissions Exchange has brokered what they are calling the first-ever sale of a personal carbon credit. The sellers, Tami and Randy Wilson of Harrisburg, Pa., expect a $17.20 PayPal payment soon. The broker will pocket a 20% commission, it’s first profit. “We don’t make money until credits are created and sold,” said Paul Herrgesell, project manager of My Emissions Exchange.

All the Wilsons had to do, in order to earn that $17.20, was invest $58,000 in a new solar power system for their home.
Bargain! Still, calculating various tax breaks and such, the Wilsons expect to “recoup their investment within six years”. Let’s wait and see. Meanwhile, the URL for My Emissions Exchange can also be read as “My Emission Sex Change”, which is probably less of an ordeal than handing over nearly sixty grand for shiny roof tiles.

GARDEN OF LIES
Tim Blair
Leftoids have been screeching for more than six years about a fake turkey that wasn’t. Now comes a terrible day of reckoning:
The produce used on the Food Network’s Jan. 3 Iron Chef of America two-hour special White House show was billed as being from the White House garden. But the show did not disclose that “stunt double vegetables” were used and not produce from the First Family’s garden.

The much ballyhooed show featured a cameo by First Lady Michelle Obama who invited the chefs to pick what they needed from the White House garden in the opening scenes.
Those Michelle-authorised vegetables never made it to the screen, due to the show being filmed one week after that deceptive garden footage. Everyone was in on the scam:
Viewers were not explicitly told that the vegetables in “Kitchen Stadium” were not the ones they had seen the chefs harvest. Various participants in the show misled viewers with references to “using radishes from the White House garden” and other similar mentions. Except for the honey, no food on the show came from the White House.
Blatant lies from Obama’s plants within the media-vegetable complex are but one reason for wilting polls. Newly-appointed Washington correspondent Jim Treacher should keep digging.
