NSW Liberal Leader Peter Debnam said today television advertisements on Sydney’s rail system were political propaganda aimed at hoodwinking commuters into believing everything on the train network was running to schedule.

“In the run-up to the election, Morris Iemma is going to spend up to $100 million on government advertising of which most will be self-serving political propaganda,” Mr Debnam said.

"This follows the political advertisements on water, infrastructure, and industrial relations. The public has a right to know just how much taxpayers' money is being spent on these political campaigns," he said.

“The Iemma Labor Government should stop spending taxpayers' money on political propaganda and simply deliver commuters better train services.

“Commuters are all too aware that under this Labor Government 270 daily train services have been slashed, overcrowding has increased and trains are now as slow as they were 70 years ago.

“Nothing runs to schedule under the Iemma Labor Government.
• Outer Suburban Carriages initially promised for delivery in 2005 now won’t be fully in service until 2007;
• Air-conditioned carriages initially promised for delivery by 2010, now won’t be fully in service until 2012;
• North West Rail Link still 11 years away from opening and running 7 years late;
• Despite changing the definition of on-time running, some suburban lines still can’t meet the 92% target, like the Northern line which could only manage 66.7% in the evening peak last week;
• The Rail Clearways project initially promised to cost $1.018 billion, will now cost $1.5 billion.

“If Labor put as much energy into fixing our public transport problems as they put into media advertising and spin, commuters would have a first-class system. After years of failure, the public has the right to be skeptical about promises for the years ahead.

"It shows Morris Iemma - just like his mentor Graham Richardson – will do whatever it takes to get re-elected,” Mr Debnam said.
