A Liberal/Nationals Coalition Government would place a heritage order on the historic workers’ holiday camp Currawong pending restoration and eventual incorporation into Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Shadow Minister for The Environment Michael Richardson said today.
“This little slice of Paradise should not be sold off to fund the unions’ squabble with the Howard Government,” Mr Richardson said.

“It’s an important part of working class Australian history – too important to be knocked down for redevelopment as luxury houses.
“Over the last 57 years tens of thousands of families have enjoyed low-cost holidays at Currawong, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It’s the very absence of facilities, of cars and roads and shopping that makes it such a special spot.
“It’s quite incredible that a place as quiet and unspoilt as Currawong could exist within the Sydney Metropolitan Area.
“Environment Minister Bob Debus claimed Currawong has no special conservation value, but if it had been owned by anyone except Unions NSW you can bet your bottom dollar he would have found five threatened species and two threatened ecological communities on the site.
“This is all about the NSW Labor Government looking after its union mates – and the people of Pittwater will be the losers.
“Planning Minister Frank Sartor has said he will not proceed with heritage applications made by Pittwater Council for the site.
“Only a Liberal/Nationals Coalition Government can save Currawong.”
