BERLIN: They paved a sacred site, put up a parking lot, and a block of flats. And last week, after 60 years, Berlin authorities erected a sign identifying the site of the bunker where Adolf Hitler committed suicide at the end of World War 11.
A large sign was erected near Wilhelmstrasse above the underground labyrinth where Hitler married Eva Braun, hours before committing suicide with her on April 30, 1945, ending the Nazi's 12-year reign of terror.

Despite the avid interest of tourists, Berlin had refused to identify the site for fear it would become a shrine for neo-Nazis.
But after years of lobbying, the private organisation Berlin Underworlds has won permission to erect the panel. A sober factual description of the bunker will rob it of any mythical power it may have had.
