Media Whisper Campaign Claims Australian Great

Gilchrist, originally uploaded by ddbsweasel.

It is possible that the Australian Cricket team will be asked to tour Pakistan soon. Such a tour will pose a risk to the players lives. Is that the reason why Gilchrist is resigning from all cricket?

There has been a media whisper campaign to remove Gilchrist. Coordinated whispers about age and competence have dogged the keeper. Is that why Gilchrist is resigning?

Adam Gilchrist is one of the greats of the game. His is a mastery as complete as Sir Garfield Sobers, who has been described as 'The Complete Cricketer' or 'The Best who has ever lived.'

Although Adam is the world record holder for test keeping dismissals, it will always be his batting for which he will be remembered (although, not recalled). He has scored 17 test centuries, which averages to one every five tests. His prodigious scoring is exceeded by the scoring rate. Victor Trumper did not hit as cleanly.

Adam is a gentleman and honorable. It is sad that he retires so young. Cricket is poorer for the loss.

Adam Gilchrist, who revolutionised the role of the wicketkeeper-batsman and one-day opening, has retired from Tests barely 24 hours after taking the world-record for dismissals. Gilchrist will step down on Monday after the final match against India and he will walk away from ODIs are the CB Series in March.

"I've come to this decision after much thought and discussion with those most important to me," Gilchrist said. "My family and I have been fortunate to have had an amazing journey full of rich experiences throughout my career and are sincerely grateful to all who have helped make this stage of our lives so fulfilling.

"I am now ready and excited to move into the next phase of my life which will, of paramount importance include much more time with Mel, Harrison, Annie and Archie.

"Thank you to Cricket Australia, the Western Australian Cricket Association and Cricket NSW for providing me the opportunity to play First-Class cricket and for the support over the many years.

"Also thank you to all my team mates and support staff who have given me the most enjoyable, fun career anyone could hope for and to the many officials and opponents I have come across. It has been terrific to play against you and more importantly get to know you."
