GROCERY PRICES IN SHARP INCREASE ACROSS QUEENSLAND

The average basket of goods across the State has had the biggest jump since ShopSmart started in July last year, with prices increasing by more than four per cent, Senator Sue Boyce, Senator for Queensland, said today.

“This sharp increase has hit the Torres Strait the most, with their grocery basket hitting $100 for the first time since ShopSmart started. The increase in the Torres Strait prices was more than eight per cent, which is double the State average.

“Woolworths at Woodridge again lead the survey with the cheapest basket of goods at $64.67. Coles in the CBD came in at $74.66, which is $10 more than last month’s prices.

“Shoppers in the Brisbane CBD are not getting the best value for money for their groceries as the Coles supermarket is the most expensive in the ShopSmart survey with a 15% increase in prices from last month.

“I am very grateful to the volunteer shoppers across Queensland that allows ShopSmart to provide a price comparison guide. It is always a better option to have prices independently supplied.

“The failed GroceryChoice website established by the Rudd Labor Government has proven to be a waste of $13 million. Now consumer group Choice, the new owners of the website, are having difficulties obtaining grocery lists and prices from the various suppliers.

“The Assistant Treasurer, Chris Bowen, the Minister responsible for GroceryChoice shows his naiveté if he believes that grocery suppliers will waste money and time compiling lists of commercially sensitive information for every one of their outlets,” Senator Boyce said.
