Gillard minister chooses harlot’s prerogative
Piers Akerman – Monday, January 14, 2013 (9:03am)
THE Gillard government has again chosen the harlot’s prerogative – power without responsibility.
Today, the welfare delivery agency, Centrelink, will begin apologising to 80,000 single parents for incorrectly telling them to destroy their pensioner concession cards.
Public servants employed at Centrelink will phone, message and write to all single parents who, from the first of January, have been forced onto the lower Newstart, or dole, payments.
Centrelink have to tell them they can continue using their old pensioner card to receive discounts on power and water bills, public transport, car registration and medicines – contrary to Centrelink advice - until at least they’re sent new cards.
Human Services Minister, Kim Carr says he’s ordered Centrelink to apologise and correct the unnecessary confusion but didn’t offer any apology himself though as minister he is responsible for his department’s actions.
At best, he admitted to the ABC he was disappointed by his department.
“I was very disappointed that a letter of the type that’s been described was sent out and I’ve asked the department to contact all people that are affected to explain again that the concessions will continue,” he told AM.
He ducked and weaved when Alexandra Kirk tried to get him to accept a degree of responsibility for the huge and distressing blunder.
Centrelink actually wrote to single parents telling them to destroy their pensioner concession cards, which was wrong.
“There are occasions when things go wrong,” Carr said. “This is one of those occasions. I’m disappointed that it’s occurred, particularly given the fact that we’ve made such effort to treat people properly and to explain their rights and their entitlements under the new arrangements.”
Kirk asked whether “someone or some people in Centrelink” will be reprimanded or lose their jobs over this?
Carr effortlessly flicked that one to the department saying “Well discipline is a matter for the public service. The secretary of the department will have a look at what’s happened here.”
The error, he said, was made by a computer.
Given the number of blunders made by this disastrous administration it may time to reboot Canberra or admit that it is a whore of a government.

OUR IMAGINARY ADVISOR
Tim Blair – Monday, January 14, 2013 (2:46pm)
Researcher Dr Christine Finlay calls for reason above sentiment, people before trees, burn-offs instead of bushfires:
“They should have been cool-burning in winter, when it was safe to do so, to reduce fuel loads,” she told AAP on Monday …The researcher was also critical about the spread of national parks.“Australia’s new trend to turn as much forest and grassland as possible into national parks is very dangerous,” she said …“(Authorities) need to change their policy drastically. It’s a kind of sentimental thing about nature being allowed to run national parks,” she said.“Appointing nature as their emergency manager, and their imaginary adviser, is not working.”
Nearly 30 homes have been destroyed in a fire currently raging across northern NSW.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Tim Blair – Monday, January 14, 2013 (2:35pm)
“China is doing exceptionally well,” climate commissioner Tim Flannery claimed last year. “They are on track to stabilise their emissions.” Let’s check that:
Toxic air has blocked out the sun, reduced visibility to 200 metres and left 20 million people choking in the Chinese capital.
Yep. Totally stable.

WAAH WAAH
Tim Blair – Monday, January 14, 2013 (1:06pm)
Radical Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir were upset with reports last week that their leader, the euphoniously-named Sheik Ismail Al-Wahwah, had called for Australia to be ruled by Muslim law.
Under a Wahwah-style government, according to reports, alcohol would be banned, an Islamic strict dress code enforced and languages other than Arabic outlawed in schools.
This was the Hizbies’ cue to call a Wahwambulance.

SUMMER IS HOT
Tim Blair – Monday, January 14, 2013 (4:22am)
You can tell it’s hot in Australia by the excited ululations of our local warming alarmist community, who for now have put aside their usual caveats about weather not being climate. They’re thrilled by recent temperature reports:
The hot weather that has fuelled fires in southern Australia has also delivered the nation its hottest day since records began a century ago.
One entire century, you say. Is anybody aware that Australia might be slightly older than this? Peter Hannam, the SMH’s “carbon economy editor”, even found records within records:
A new temperature high for the great heatwave cooking much of the continent has been set with Moomba clocking up 49.6 degrees today.
Also from carbon economy editor person:
Birdsville and Thargomindah, two remote Queensland towns, are vying for the state’s top temperature in decades as the current heatwave sears large regions of inland Australia.Birdsville recently jumped to 49 degrees, equalling a level reached by the town in 1981, and not far from a 49.2 level reached in 1972.
So these temperature spikes aren’t exactly unknown, then. Here’s a report from the South Australian Register in 1899:
BIRDSVILLE, December 31. The weather during the past four or five weeks has been terribly hot, the glass having risen as high as 122. deg in the shade.
And headlines from the Adelaide Advertiser in 1906:
TWO YEARS WITHOUT RAIN, THE PARCHED INTERIOR, NATIVE BIRDS KILLED BY THE HEAT
And the Canberra Times in 1953:
Shoppers Collapse, Train Tracks Buckle in Sydney’s Heat
When alarmists say that this summer follows climate change predictions, they’re only telling half the story. This summer also predicts the past.

UPDATE:
A bushfire in the Blue Mountains National Park was sparked by a father and son who allegedlytorched clandestine meth labs the day police were supposed to raid the multimillion-dollar operation.

SLIGHT CHRONOLOGY ISSUE
Tim Blair – Monday, January 14, 2013 (1:30am)
Part one of the David Hicks story describes his arrival at Guantanamo. Shouldn’t it begin prior to that? Like, when he left Australia to join Jew-hating Islamic terrorists?
