Labor Govt Looks Certain To Increase Train Fares By Up To 30 Per Cent Over Four Years

Shadow Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian said today train commuters look certain to pay 8% more from 2009 and up to 30% more over four years for train tickets after the IPART’s final draft determination.

The determination recommends that CityRail fares increase by 12% over four years, however some individual fares are set to increase by 30% over four years.

The Australian Law Reform Commission Report showing that 95% of child sex offenders escape conviction is a disgraceful indictment on the lack of commitment of State Governments towards protecting our most valuable asset, our children, Shadow Attorney General Greg Smith SC said today.

“Years ago the NSW Government’s Task Force on sexual assault called for specialist Courts, with properly trained and suited Judges, prosecutors and support staff to be established,” Mr Smith said.

The bail laws have again failed the community following reports that the alleged attacker of an 82 year old war veteran had been granted bail by a Magistrate, after his partner and alleged accomplice had been released on bail by Police, Shadow Attorney General Greg Smith SC said today.

“The bail laws are in urgent need of comprehensive review and I plead with the State Labor Government to stop sitting on its hands,” Mr Smith said.

In another blow to the Western Sydney health system, a laparoscopic surgeon has withdrawn their services from Nepean Hospital citing a lack of equipment upgrades by the State Labor Government, NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell said today.

“In the week we learn of a $30 million shortfall in funding at Westmead Children’s Hospital, this is even more evidence of the crisis in our hospitals,” Mr O’Farrell said.
