MADISON, Wis. — The nation's largest group of atheists and agnostics is suing President Bush, the governor of Wisconsin and other officials over the federal law designating a National Day of Prayer.Of course, the same argument might be mounted about many such things.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation sued Friday in U.S. district court, arguing that the president's mandated proclamations calling on Americans to pray violates a constitutional ban on government officials endorsing religion.
The day of prayer, held each year on the first Thursday of May, creates a "hostile environment for nonbelievers, who are made to feel as if they are political outsiders," the lawsuit said.
The national proclamation issued this year asked God's blessings on our country and called for Americans to observe the day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.
Take, as an example Global Warming. Despite mounting evidence that the world has not heated since '98 and yet there are many millions of tons of more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, people are not allowed to question the dogma. Of course the US President has taken reasonable, prudent action, but that is not something that activists want to hear.
How about Labor Day? Each year billions of dollars are sent to labor trades unions to prevent people from prospering. The result is poverty.
Wouldn't it be better to oppose hunger and poverty than oppose those who work hardest at easing such from exercising that which comforts them .. for free?
