Editorial Mon 15th Feb

Former Senator Natasha Stott-Despoja had understood Machiavelli and knew a concept encapsulated by the Prince which many were getting wrong in the late 1990’s. So applying all her mental powers, she went on radio and told people how to get it right. Machiavelli, she declared, was pronounced ‘Match-i-ah-velli.’ The senator despaired at people misrepresenting the Prince. After all, Hitler had had the book on his bed side table for inspiration and late-night reading. He had needed to improve his mind. There are many examples, provided by Charles and Andrew to name two, of Princes who fail the bedside table test.

It was with delight I happened on Delderfield’s story of a horseman, Paul Craddock, who purchased a farm.

Dr Maureen O’Keefe talking to 14 yo Ikey (Delderfield’s Horseman riding by)

“Ikey,” she said, “There’s a word you wouldn’t have heard yet that just about describes you so remember it and you can recognise yourself later on! You’re Machiavellian! Remember that – Mack-i-ah-vellian”

“What does it mean?” he asked, and she said, gesticulating, “It’s having an instinctive understanding of people and how their minds work and it’s a priceless quality to possess, particularly if you are ever thinking of going into business.”

“I’ll not do that,” he said, scornfully, “I’m going to join the cavalry!”

“Ah,” she said, “Then I’m afraid it won’t be of much use to you. Still, it’s nice to have and I daresay it’ll help you get along with the ladies!”

The former senator never really explained her clarification. She is a left wing loony and the press would never have dared ask it. But, what was it her clarification addressed? Was the senator addressing a mid 90’s man drought after too many eligible bachelors had bought into a hipster form of feminism? Had she approved of Hitler’s late night reading? We could ask her, but we may never know.

Editorial Sun 21st February Current Affairs

Sixteen days without internet access. Lockdown meant my zoom meetings were conducted, over 8 hours, using phone data which emptied my bandwidth for the month. What had happened was a storm on the 5th of February took out cable access but left the wifi running without carrying a connection We could see the router was active, but there was no internet access. We contacted the estate agent who said they had contacted the landlord after coming over to turn the router on and off to no affect. Not knowing which ISP held the actual account, I searched online (using phone data) and found that NBN was down and slated to be fixed after the weekend.

During the weekend, I noticed the NBN fault had been fixed, but we still did not have internet, so I pointed out to the estate agent that no fault was reported for this address. They yelled at me, saying it was not their job to stay on the phone of an ISP and wait hours, but they had told the landlord who had promised to fix it. I pointed out the landlord might need to be told to report the issue to the ISP to fix it. They said they got my point, but had already told the landlord. “Have a good day sir!” they yelled before hanging up.

I contacted radio 3AW to report the issue. Neil Mitchell had me waiting forty minutes before not listening to me, or following up.

One other member of the household noticed our landlord had not collected their mail from Optus, an ISP, and opened it, discovering that our share house was due to have internet cancelled because NBN did not want to compete with Optus Cable. But the cancellation was for the 15th of February or later, and should not have happened yet. The information was relayed to the estate agent who passed it on to the landlord. I contacted 3AW to provide an update by email. Still no reply from 3AW.

The estate agent tasked an employee to wait on premises until Optus sent a technician. But, Optus claimed they had sent a technician a day before and they had not got on premises when everyone in the household was here during lockdown. They claimed to have rung the bell and made commotion, but they had not noticed the Menulog and DoorDasher employees delivering food without issue. The estate agent spent all day on the premises and Optus did not show up. Finally, on 19th of February, two weeks after the internet had gone down, Optus showed, and an estate agent was on hand. The fault was fixed, it having been established that Cable provision would be ongoing until a planned changeover to NBN.

My software upgraded and at 1am on 20th February while Melbourne had had an overnight 26 degree centigrade evening, the wifi router stopped working. I contacted the agent about 7:30 am and sent a picture of my WiFi reception showing our address router was not functioning. They did not even bother sending someone to turn it on and off. Maybe Monday?

In Defence of Conservative Values via It’s a Wonderful Life (1946 Capra)

The scene has three conservatives talking over dinner. One conservative is the father who wants his son to follow him in business. Another conservative is the son who wants to make a name for himself in the world. Another conservative is the servant whose relationship to those she serves is positive for all of them.

The three are not agreeing with each other, but there is none of the shaming, blaming and rancour one finds when arguing with a left winger. The father listens to his son, and argues on point, convincingly. The son hears his father’s arguments and lets him know he still loves him. The servant reinforces core conservative values. Note, these are not social conservative values, which judges and shames. These are values embraced by modern economic conservatives.

The conservatism is not from a lost time in America. President Donald Trump is not a conservative, neither is he known for conservatism, but his Vice President, Mike Pence is. The greatness of Trump’s Presidency was enhanced by the demeanour and prosecution of Pence as Vice President. One hopes Trump runs and wins again in 2024. Not only will Trump be the first President acquitted of an impeachment twice, he could be the first President elected three times without resorting to corruption.

Jewish Voice for Peace Fights to Preserve Anti-Zionist Hatred Online

by Ariel Behar
IPT News
February 23, 2021

The group Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) claims to oppose bigotry and to support security and self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians. But a new campaign JVP has joined aims to block rumored plans by Facebook to add the term "Zionism" to its hate speech policies. Zionism is the belief in Jewish self-determination in their ancestral homeland: In other words, supporting Israel's right to exist.

"@Facebook is considering whether to treat 'Zionist' as proxy for 'Jew' in its hate speech policy," JVP tweeted last week during a Twitter town hall. "This would make 'Zionist' a de facto protected category, letting FB shut down critical conversations about Zionists under the guise of fighting antisemitism."

"If @Facebook restricts use of the word 'Zionist' on its platforms, already severe censorship will grow," the anti-Semitic BDS Movement also wrote during the Twitter town hall. "Palestinians will be blocked from describing our daily lives under Israeli apartheid, and our family histories of dispossession and military occupation."

An anonymous Facebook employee sent out an email detailing how the social media company should moderate anti-Semitism on its platform, technology news website The Verge reported in November. A Facebook spokesperson told The Verge that the term Zionist is removed from its platform if and when it is used as a proxy for anti-Semitism.

"We are looking at the question of how we should interpret attacks on 'Zionists' to determine whether the term is used as a proxy for attacking Jewish or Israeli people," the Facebook employee wrote. "The term brings with it much history and various meanings, and we are looking to increase our understanding of how it is used by people on our platform."

JVP joined the campaign opposing the policy, "Facebook, We Need to Talk." It has received support from nearly 52,000 people. It claims that the social media giant may decide on a policy this month. JVP will be on board to virtually deliver the petition to Facebook during a webinar this week.

There are plenty of examples in which the term Zionist has been used as a slur against pro-Israel Jews.

In December, the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign posted a meme on Facebook-owned Instagram instructing students to "start Zionist shaming." The image showed a young man burying his face in his arms, surrounded by terms including, "racist!", "colonizer!", and "go back to Brooklyn."

Don't give up on hope. Donald Trump is possibly the first President to have kept more promises than he made on campaign. He made that observation while putting aside a "Great but boring" speech. And the crowd loved it. Trump has promised to uphold the constitution, including the 2nd amendment. It is natural to compare Trump with the last President, Obama, but that is comparing polar opposites. Trump is competent. Obama was a divisive figure who did not like America.

Leadership in Australia is at a low. PM Turnbull fulsomely mates the US President. An effective Deputy PM resigned after the PM screwed him over. During the recent SSM campaign, Joyce said he had not a great personal track record but believed in the institution of marriage. Meanwhile Turnbull prevented informed debate on SSM, but also Turnbull actively prevented Joyce getting ahead of the news cycle. Turnbull is not dumb. Turnbull is too self absorbed to be competent. Turnbull dithers because he does not know what pathway is best for himself. Shorten epitomises the worst of any politician in Australia.

Leadership has an affect on the population. The selfishness of Melbourne peoples on public transport is illustrative. Truly difficult, selfish notables are bearded hipsters with their precious screen time on mobile devices, and, devout muslims. One does not notice the conventional dressed, but the separatist muslim jamming public transport is noticeable. I get it welfare does not pay for private transport. The reason why Hipsters are obvious is because they stand out too. And it is the leadership of Hipsters and the leadership of Muslims which is notably poor. Just as the worst neighbourhoods in the US are Democrat strongholds.

It is difficult to overstate the crass politics of Bill Shorten's backflip on a minor change to worker conditions, with Sunday penalty rates brought into line with Saturday ones. The Fair Work commissioner was a Shorten appointee that Shorten had pleaded to honour as an independent umpire. It won't be as effective as some claim. It might mean businesses will now consider opening on Sunday when many won't. It is famous that union employees will only work when they get penalty rates. When Shorten led a union he traded off these rates. But Australia will hit $500 billion debt this year and Shorten is preventing effective cuts to spending. One day, our children will do without because Shorten played short term politics.

I am reading a research article by Matthew C. MacWilliams , University of Massachusetts Amherst, a PhD student. The article was popular among #FakeNewsMedia. Matthew writes
"Whether authoritarians are activated by threat or nonauthoritarians act more authoritarian when threatened, my second hypothesis (H2) submits that a fearful electorate is a ready audience for the finger pointing of a fearmongering, demagogic can- didate like Trump. As such, fear was another factor that favored the emergence of a Donald Trump candidacy in 2016, as Republican voters who were more concerned about terrorist threats were more likely to support a candidate who calls for vigilance and aggression. Moreover, employing Hetherington et al.’s negative interaction theory, I expected that nonauthoritarians who were more worried about terrorism would also be more likely to support Trump, providing him with a likely pool of core voters that extended beyond strong authoritarians. "
Matthew failed to justify his wild assertions. He bloviates wildly.

The ABC2 program Maximum Choppage at 9pm tonight is important. Timothy Ly is a child of Cambodian/Chinese refugees who fled the killing fields, travelling over a minefield and sailing to Australia for a new life. They have worked hard to start a new life and Tim has done a masterful job of answering that hope without being the doctor or lawyer his parents may have anticipated. He is more precious than that. Firstly, at age 18, fresh out of a Sydney suburban high school, he made a short movie with friends on no budget, called Maximum Choppage. It featured the martial arts he had been trained in as a thing to do. Then he gathered together a group of keen film students and, again on no budget, wrote, directed and produced a feature length Maximum Choppage round 2. It was a martial arts romantic comedy and it took years to complete. It unearthed talent which is still filtering through Sydney studios. People such as Maria Tran, Rudge Hollis and others. Maria has been involved with projects like Digital Stories, where ethnically diverse peoples tell their life stories on a cube or wall. Everyone has a story to tell, but to tell it in an Australia context, makes it Australian. The ABC has failed by not telling these stories, but by focusing on a very small aspect of Australian culture. With this new tv series, there is a hope that the ABC can be brought back to the fold of its core duty. Tim's parents risked being among the fifty percent casualties of people drowned coming to Australia, fleeced by pirates. His baby, twelve years in the making, shows the reward garnered from that risk. I salute you, Tim, and wish the show every success.

The world is dangerous even when evil, anarchistic ideologues are not murdering innocent peoples on little pretext. The panic stricken new Queensland Premier illustrated how shaky control is when a tropical depression which had been a cyclone wandered through the state, upending some trees and denying power to some towns. A few years earlier another incompetent ALP government had killed people through incompetence. But the storm wasn't that bad. But on this day in 1875, a tropical cyclone which flooded the coastline of Queensland also threatened a 500 ton, 60m steamship with some one hundred and thirty people on board. The Gothenburg was capable of sailing through the swell, but she had been pushed too close to the Barrier Reef and lodged there. She had been on a journey from Darwin to Adelaide. There had been insufficient space on the life boats and they weren't strong enough for the elements as the steamer was. Two of the four boats were lost with four crew each as the Captain tried to use them to help lift the Gothenburg off the reef. The storm was too overwhelming. An attempt was made to dislodge Gothenburg by reversing her on full power. This cut her in half and holed her. In trying to get on one of the two remaining life boats, the life boats were overwhelmed and capsized. Survivors hung on to Gothenburg's rigging until the storm ended. Sharks claimed some bodies. An upended life boat was righted. At first survivors rowed to mainland, but realising they would not make it, diverted to a nearby island. A life boat with four survivors that survived the attempt to dislodge Gothenburg was discovered by another steamer, and so some twenty two men survived. Lost were all officers, a former Premier of South Australia, a french vice consul. One magistrate had missed the journey, but lost his wife and six children. Many other important personages died too. Darwin had lost many who were needed to build the community.

The world changes, but it also remains the same. On this day in 1917, a desperate German Empire offered Mexico the three states of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona if Mexico went to war against the US on the event of the US going to war with Germany. It was anticipated the US would go to war because of German U-boat activity. In April Germany was proven right. Mexico did not answer favourably to Germany's desperate plea after their telegram was intercepted by British intelligence and leaked to the public as the Zimmerman Telegram. On this day in 1945, the Egyptian PM was assassinated after he had called for new elections and opposed the candidacy of Muslim Brotherhood. The assassin was from a third party, Wafd, which was the party from which the PM had split in '38.
From 2014
As a younger teenager I read a book called Grimus. It was edgy and strange and depicted sex in a way that was desirable, readable. The author's first published novel, on this day, 1989, the author had a price placed on his head of $3 million for his death by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. It is unclear as to why Khomeini issued the bounty after placing a fatwā ordering Rushdie's death. But, it diminishes the authority of the fatwā. It was a time that moderate Islamic scholars could have stood up and corrected the mistake. Someone, some where could have said that the death proclamation was not part of the 'religion of peace', but, sadly for faithful Islamic people today, no one stood forward, or stood up.

Some people died. A Japanese translator was murdered by fanatics who failed to adhere to the letter of the proclamation. Publishers were threatened. Rushdie was put into protective custody. In the late '80's I was attending church at St Thomas' Moorebank, Anglican. One idiot minister noted bad things happened to people who weren't faithful, and Rushdie had not adhered to his faith. I can criticise the minister without people wanting to kill me. Tehran maintains a shrine to one idiot who blew himself up trying to blow up Rushdie. Every 14th of Feb, Iran sends a valentine's card to Rushdie, reminding him they want him dead. Worth considering who the people are Obama wants to supervise Middle East peace.

But, while it may be viewed as reprehensible that so few within Islam spoke against the outrageous ruling, what of those with a pastoral role? It is not an issue for Christian churches. They give aid to Islamic peoples, too, but not targeted, How dare they have such contempt of Islamic peoples. Iran is not a world leader for Islam. She is a terrorist nation, part of an axis of evil. Her people are far better than their government. It is wrong to promote terror. But that is what many governments and churches have done in their dealings with Iran. Iranian people deserve freedom from such oppression.

Restitution for Wrongs

5 The LORD said to Moses, 6 "Say to the Israelites: 'Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way and so is unfaithful to the LORD is guilty 7and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged....

Today's New Testament reading: Mark 4:1-20

The Parable of the Sower

1 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water's edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 "Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow....

February 23: Morning
"I will never leave thee." - Hebrews 13:5
No promise is of private interpretation. Whatever God has said to any one saint, he has said to all. When he opens a well for one, it is that all may drink. When he openeth a granary-door to give out food, there may be some one starving man who is the occasion of its being opened, but all hungry saints may come and feed too. Whether he gave the word to Abraham or to Moses, matters not, O believer; he has given it to thee as one of the covenanted seed. There is not a high blessing too lofty for thee, nor a wide mercy too extensive for thee. Lift up now thine eyes to the north and to the south, to the east and to the west, for all this is thine. Climb to Pisgah's top, and view the utmost limit of the divine promise, for the land is all thine own. There is not a brook of living water of which thou mayst not drink. If the land floweth with milk and honey, eat the honey and drink the milk, for both are thine. Be thou bold to believe, for he hath said, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."In this promise, God gives to his people everything. "I will never leave thee." Then no attribute of God can cease to be engaged for us. Is he mighty? He will show himself strong on the behalf of them that trust him. Is he love? Then with lovingkindness will he have mercy upon us. Whatever attributes may compose the character of Deity, every one of them to its fullest extent shall be engaged on our side. To put everything in one, there is nothing you can want, there is nothing you can ask for, there is nothing you can need in time or in eternity, there is nothing living, nothing dying, there is nothing in this world, nothing in the next world, there is nothing now, nothing at the resurrection-morning, nothing in heaven which is not contained in this text--"I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

Evening
"Take up the cross, and follow me." - Mark 10:21

JYou have not the making of your own cross, although unbelief is a master carpenter at cross-making; neither are you permitted to choose your own cross, although self-will would fain be lord and master; but your cross is prepared and appointed for you by divine love, and you are cheerfully to accept it; you are to take up the cross as your chosen badge and burden, and not to stand cavilling at it. This night Jesus bids you submit your shoulder to his easy yoke. Do not kick at it in petulance, or trample on it in vain-glory, or fall under it in despair, or run away from it in fear, but take it up like a true follower of Jesus. Jesus was a cross-bearer; he leads the way in the path of sorrow. Surely you could not desire a better guide! And if he carried a cross, what nobler burden would you desire? The Via Crucis is the way of safety; fear not to tread its thorny paths.

Beloved, the cross is not made of feathers, or lined with velvet, it is heavy and galling to disobedient shoulders; but it is not an iron cross, though your fears have painted it with iron colours, it is a wooden cross, and a man can carry it, for the Man of sorrows tried the load. Take up your cross, and by the power of the Spirit of God you will soon be so in love with it, that like Moses, you would not exchange the reproach of Christ for all the treasures of Egypt. Remember that Jesus carried it, and it will smell sweetly; remember that it will soon be followed by the crown, and the thought of the coming weight of glory will greatly lighten the present heaviness of trouble. The Lord help you to bow your spirit in submission to the divine will ere you fall asleep this night, that waking with to-morrow's sun, you may go forth to the day's cross with the holy and submissive spirit which becomes a follower of the Crucified.

I am a decent man and don't care for the abuse given me. I created a video raising awareness of anti police feeling among western communities. I chose the senseless killing of Nicola Cotton, a Louisiana policewoman who joined post Katrina, to highlight the issue. I did this in order to get an income after having been illegally blacklisted from work in NSW for being a whistleblower. I have not done anything wrong. Local council appointees refused to endorse my work, so I did it for free. Youtube's Adsence refused to allow me to profit from their marketing it. Meanwhile, I am hostage to abysmal political leadership and hopeless journalists. My shopfront has opened on Facebook.

I am publishing a book called Bread of Life: January.

Bread of Life is a daily bible quote with a layman's understanding of the meaning. I give one quote for each day, and also a series of personal stories illustrating key concepts eg Who is God? What is a miracle? Why is there tragedy?

January is the first of the anticipated year-long work of thirteen books. One for each month and the whole year. It costs to publish. It (Kindle version) should retail at about $2US online, but the paperback version would cost more, according to production cost.If you have a heart for giving, I fundraise at gofund.me/27tkwuc (Gofundme finished the fund raiser, 2017)
