Brough rejected: so much for Rudd’s stunt
Andrew Bolt
A stupid rejection and a belatedly smart withdrawal:
THE federal government’s indigenous “war cabinet” will not be bipartisan after a decision today by the Prime Minister, the Coalition said.
Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson said Kevin Rudd called him today to tell him he had decided to reject his advice to include former indigenous affairs minister Mal Brough on the housing policy advisory group.
“Mr Rudd has on that basis decided that he will proceed with the indigenous housing commission, but it will not be a bipartisan one directly including myself,” Dr Nelson said.
What a stupid waste not to use Mal Brough. But it exposes the insincerity of Rudd’s claim that he wanted to rise “above politics” and reach “bipartisanship”. What he truly wanted was to neuter the Opposition, which in fact will do its duty to voters best by keeping its distance and reserving its right to oppose.

I’d actually prefer less caring, then
Andrew Bolt
Theodore Dalrymple:
I realised that the town was a true community as soon as I heard a rumour that an old lady, a herbalist, had poisoned one of her neighbours. That is what community means: caring enough to poison people. In cities, contact with neighbours is so fleeting and impersonal that antagonism can be expressed only with baseball bats, a crude method requiring little cunning.
It sounded right to me, at least initially.

Think of You
by asconejar
This is the first song I wrote. Dedicated to my first love, my wife right now. This was highly influenced by new wave music in the 80's: new order, omd, depechemode and the likes...The beat was conceived with our first Psr yamaha keyboard. This song inspired me to write more and to explore the creative side of me. I met my wife during our first year in college. And it took four years since I wrote this song for me to get the yes from her!

It's a cover version, of The Everly Brother's song... I've mixed it different ways, today... And finally i'm satisfied with this version....
Most of it is with vocals, background vocals, etc.... I've mixed them again and again.... It starts with a cappella....

A tune made famous by Blillie Holiday...Here in another dressing, or perhaps down to the bare bones..at leas that was the intention.
I love the tune God Bless the Child. I noticed from the internet (Youtube) that many of the contestants in American Idol sing this tune. That makes something to a great song. At least for me, it does. This was an attempt at revitalizing my view of the tune.
I only intended a short one verse demo, to find a key for a vocalist, but it was fun and quick to extend in a jamming way, so I did. I hope it is enjoyable even if you dont know the song from before.

An invitation to chaos
Piers Akerman
AUSTRALIA is about to see the greatest increase in its migrant population since the post-World War II immigration scheme began.
Last week, the Rudd Labor Government announced a lift in permanent and temporary migration for 2008-09 to nearly 300,000, and Immigration Minister Chris Evans has indicated that some of the rules will be eased to ensure those numbers are met. -While I do not doubt that the ALP will attempt to manipulate the situation to exploit the poorest with no possible reward in the long term to anyone other than the ALP, yet I love immigrants. I have worked with many, from most nations and all continents (one was born in Antarctica). Multiculturalism is a failure, but cultural diversity is to be celebrated for its success. The peoples that command my greatest affection are South East Asian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Cambodian. Their children have grown to be decent, hardworking and giving people. Often, there communities have failed to merge with society at large, but have retained elements of their community both new and old. So that Australian trained doctors and nurses live among their brothers and sisters, some of whom are poor or unemployed. Those ghettos so favored by the ALP don't seem to form with such communities. So that the most disadvantaged suburb in the state, Carramar (disadvantaged in terms of most number of unemployed, single mothers and people on the pension, as well as distance from services such as health, police etc) has children who prosper at school.
But the insane ALP idea that has communities in ghettos, like Macquarrie Fields and Bankstown has led to gang situations where decent people fear to stay.
I don't trust Rudd or his plans. I don't think he will do something worthwhile. But, I love migrants, and think they can make something worthwhile of the poor lot Rudd will offer.-ed.

Come now, Ms Devine, surely you exagerate in making your point about the sexualisation of children:
Opening tonight at the elegant Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in the heart of Paddington is an exhibition of photographs by Bill Henson, featuring naked 12 and 13 year-olds. The invitation to the exhibition features a large photo of a girl, the light shining on her hair, eyes downcast, dark shadows on her sombre, beautiful face, and the budding breasts of puberty on full display, her hand casually covering her crotch.Oh. Apologies. Henson’s pictures really do include soft-porn shots of young teenagers.

Was it worth it?
Andrew Bolt
Time for frank talk. We had hoped that liberation would bring an end to the killing that had made the country a hell-hole. Instead:
...it has a murder rate of more than 50 a day
We had hoped that the new government had finally managed to stem the bloodshed. Instead:
Police brought in reinforcements as violence hopped from slum to slum in scenes reminiscent of some of the bloodiest days...
We had hoped that with freedom the sheer savagery would be tamed. Instead (and don’t click on the link if you can’t handle horrific pictures):
They are burning people down there.
We had hoped that the liberated country would finally stand as a beacon of tolerance and democracy in a region that had too little of either. Instead:
Making (its) infant democracy, institutions and leaders more responsive and accountable must be part of the solution to the problem of xenophobia.
It’s almost enough to you wonder if freedom really was worth this appalling price.
Oops. Wait! That’s a question we’re actually allowed to ask only of this country, isn’t it.
Joe Hockey has compared Opposition leader Brendan Nelson to a diamond being forged under pressure but has stopped short of saying he will be the Liberals' long-term leader.

Reality of Rudd sinks in
Piers Akerman
ON Sunday, I swung the family car into a BP service station on Warringah Road at Forestville to top up the tank.
At $1.38 a litre, the price was too good to pass up.
Last Friday, when I drove by, the price I recall was around $1.50, today it is around $1.47.
I was able to squeeze some 25 litres into the Tarago’s tank, costing about $34.50.
If Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson’s promise to cut petrol costs by reducing the excise by 5c had applied, I would have saved $1.25.
That might seem like chicken feed but it runs to $60 over a year and as a member of an ordinary working family, that is $60 I would rather keep in my pocket than hand over to the Rudd Government.
Of course, it is a given that Big Government, like Big Oil aren’t that interested in Ordinary Working Families until they want something - your vote or your money and in the case of the Rudd Government’s first Budget, it is both.

Sky is not the limit for Flannery’s scares
Andrew Bolt
Tim Flannery didn’t realise global warming would actually stop in 1998. He didn’t realise it would actually rain again in Sydney and fill the dams. He didn’t figure Perth would find more water and not become a ”ghost city”. He didn’t realise there was no proved link between global warming and hurricanes, after all. He didn’t know the sea level rises we can at worst expect this century won’t even reach our knees, let alone the roof of an ”eight-storey building”.
But utterly undaunted, our Alarmist of the Year is still beating the scary drum, with scary “solutions”:
SCIENTIST Tim Flannery has proposed a radical solution to climate change which may change the colour of the sky.

The Saudi Government should also be formally asked by our own for a “please explain” - and perhaps a quiet “desist”.

James Stewart Tribute
James Maitland Stewart (20 May 1908 – 2 July 1997), popularly known as Jimmy Stewart especially in the United States, was an iconic, Academy Award-winning American film and stage actor, best known for his self-effacing screen persona. Over the course of his career, he starred in many films widely considered classics and was nominated for five Oscars, winning one in competition and one life achievement. He also had a noted military career, rising to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Air Force.

Born in Indiana, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, Stewart first pursued a career as an architect before being drawn to the theater at Princeton University. His first success came as an actor on Broadway, before making his Hollywood debut in 1935. Stewart's career gained momentum after his well-received Frank Capra films, including his Academy Award nominated role in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Throughout his seven decades in Hollywood, Stewart cultivated a versatile career and recognized screen image in such classics as The Philadelphia Story, Harvey, It's a Wonderful Life, Rear Window, Rope, and Vertigo. He is the most represented leading actor on the AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies (10th Anniversary Edition) list. As of 2007, 10 of his films have been inducted into the United States National Film Registry.

Stewart left his mark on a wide range of film genres, including screwball comedies, westerns, biographies, suspense thrillers and family films. He worked for a number of renowned directors later in his career, most notably Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, Billy Wilder, Frank Capra and Anthony Mann. He won many of the industry's highest honors and earned Lifetime Achievement awards from every major film organization. He died in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of classic performances, and is considered one of the finest actors of the "Golden Age of Hollywood." He was named the third Greatest Male Star of All Time by the American Film Institute.

In Memory of Anne Boleyn, who died today, 1536
Final hours
Although the evidence against them was unconvincing, the accused were found guilty and condemned to death by their peers. George Boleyn and the other accused men were executed on May 17, 1536. Lord Kingston, the keeper of the Tower, reported that Anne seemed very happy and ready to be done with life. The King commuted Anne's sentence from burning to beheading and employed a swordsman from St Omer for the execution, rather than having a queen beheaded with the common axe. They came for Anne on the morning of May 19 to take her to the Tower Green. Anthony Kingston, the Constable of the Tower, wrote:
“ This morning she sent for me, that I might be with her at such time as she received the good Lord, to the intent I should hear her speak as touching her innocency alway to be clear. And in the writing of this she sent for me, and at my coming she said, 'Mr. Kingston, I hear I shall not die afore noon, and I am very sorry therefore, for I thought to be dead by this time and past my pain.' I told her it should be no pain, it was so little. And then she said, 'I heard say the executioner was very good, and I have a little neck,' and then put her hands about it, laughing heartily.
I have seen many men and also women executed, and that they have been in great sorrow, and to my knowledge this lady has much joy in death. Sir, her almoner is continually with her, and had been since two o'clock after midnight.”
She wore a red petticoat under a loose, dark grey gown of damask trimmed in fur. Her dark hair was bound up and she wore her customary French headdress. She made a short speech:
“ Good Christian people, I am come hither to die, for according to the law, and by the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither to accuse no man, nor to speak anything of that, whereof I am accused and condemned to die, but I pray God save the king and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never: and to me he was ever a good, a gentle and sovereign lord. And if any person will meddle of my cause, I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me. O Lord have mercy on me, to God I commend my soul."
She had to protect her daughter, who was to grow up without her mother. She died with great dignity.
Toxic: Garbage Island - Part 1
SEE MORE
For years we've been reading about a patch of garbage the size of Texas floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, ingeniously dubbed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Basically, any trash that gets dumped in the water rides the currents to this one spot and joins an ever-increasing flotilla of crap. For all the breathless accounts of the mess and its impact on the area's sealife, however, no one seemed to have a picture of the buildup.
In order to sate our own curiosity, VBS joined the crew of a research vessel studying the trash and sailed out into one of the most remote spots of open water in the world, the North Pacific Gyre, in search of this mythical garbage island. What we discovered once we got there was an ecological disaster beyond any of our expectations and possibly the single worst thing human beings have done to the planet and ourselves. Hope you're into cancer and sex-reversal!

With abundant time on my hands, I've put this together, with a little help from some friends. Thanks to Lapskin for some insightful thoughts on the track and to Mick Fleetwood for the percussion (loops).
This started out as an electronic mix but wound up being something a bit different. A single line lyric changed the whole thing.
All of the instruments, except for the percussion track, are done using the Korg, via MIDI, played in realtime.
You may have to turn up your speakers to hear this. It sounds different on my systems, which is crazy. But, oh well.
Here's to a great weekend.

St. Louis Rag (1903)
by georgeptingley
A more joyous rag has yet to be written. Composed in 1903, the St. Louis Rag will forever be associated with the great St. Louis World's Fair of 1904.
Composer Tom Turpin (1873-1922) was born in Savannah, Georgia but raised in St. Louis. He followed his father's trade in the saloon business, and his Rosebud bar became a ragtime center for Scott Joplin and others.
For those keeping score, the form is intro AA BB CC DD. The last section as written is particularly repetitive which means the composer is inviting the performer to strut his stuff. No problem, Tom. Hope you like it!

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd's "working families" Budget has failed to impress many of its targets, an exclusive opinion survey has found.
Nearly 70 per cent of households with children fear they will end up being worse off or are unsure about the Budget, Galaxy Research found in weekend polling.
A third of households with children - 31 per cent - believe they will be better off from last Tuesday's Budget, while 25 per cent said they would be worse off and 44 per cent were uncommitted.
Just 23 per cent of all voters said they would be better off and a third said they would be worse off.
And more than a third of those earning under $70,000 a year said they thought their finances would suffer.
The biggest worriers were older Australians, pointing to Budget disappointment among pensioners.
Some 41 per cent of those aged over 50 were pessimistic about the Budget.
Another indication pensioners are unhappy was the Budget's poor response from households without children, 37 per cent of them saying it would not make them better off.

Broken (collab)
by fromano, NorthPoint, Filmscorz and reinacollins
Well, it's no big news I love the Blues, and even though I'm not BB King (not even close), I tenaciously keep tryin' to play my guitar "the bluesy way"... failing, most of the times. This is one of those efforts.
The making of this song started on August 2007 when Alan (NorthPoint) wrote lyrics upon Jeff's (FilmScorz) "Blues 7 (for collaboration)" and asked Reina (ReinaCollins) to sing them and me to play some guitar but, for various unfortunate reasons (Jeff's mac crashed and the original Logic project got lost), never got to the point of being released.
Some days ago me and Alan (NorthPoint) decided that it was time to make it see the light of day, so we started from scratch, recorded all tracks once again, and I made a mix with Reina's Incredible vocal track I already had, shaked it a lil' bit, and here it is, at last.
It's a traditional electric blues number, no frills, no bells and whistles. I tried to keep it simple, arrangement-wise, so don't expect screaming synthesizers, hehe.
I'm always thrilled when I can collaborate with musicians like Alan, Jeff and Reina, because whatever we decide to do, I'm sure that we'll have al lot of fun doing it, and that's what the whole thing is about, isn't it? Thanks Alan, Thanks Jeff, Thanks Reina. It's an honor to make music with you.
Enjoy the ride, my friends, and long live the Blues.

Headlines Sunday 18th May
Dental care is rotten
Piers Akerman
DURING the run-up to the last federal election, the then Rudd Labor opposition made a meal out of the then Howard Liberal government’s dental policies - or the claimed lack of them.
Now, six months on, with probably 20 per cent of its term in office behind it, the Rudd Labor government has not only removed the services the Howard government installed, it has reduced the level of dental care to less than it was before the last government’s eleventh hour initiatives.
As associate professor Hans Zoellner, the chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Oral Health, says, this is a truly appalling situation, a national tragedy.
Since the Rudd Labor government came to office, the state of dental care in Australia has gone backwards and last week’s federal Budget clearly demonstrated that, for all its claimed compassion, the Labor Party doesn’t have a clue about the problem or how to address it.

Build that dam before it’s too damn late
Andrew Bolt
Victoria’s Brumby Government has, for religious reasons, refused to build the cheap new dam that was planned long ago for the flood-prone Mitchell River.
Now its hugely expensive alternatives - a $3 billion desalination plant and a pipeline from Goulburn to bring down water “saved” by fixing irrigation losses - are springing leaks

Do we live in an age of hatred? Or has the language of political insult simply become more extreme? ... -Strange how the conservative attack, which is mild is compared with the over the top gratuitous assault of the lefty liberals. Were they reversed, the lefty insults would not have been published, such is their strength. - ed

An even bigger bungle than than we suspected:
THE Federal Government appears to have grossly underestimated the number of people set to abandon private health insurance following its controversial Medicare changes.

London’s Daily Mail describes how Robert Mugabe’s thugs bashed Opposition supporters to death, and beat others to a literal pulp. It showed one of the survivors - a picture too grizzly to show of her wounds is linked to her flickr photo. Mugabe should not be allowed to retain power. - ed
