People we support

Teach Your Congregation to Give to God's Five Funds

Should Pastors ever talk about money? Only if you want to make disciples. What we worship shows in how we spend our time, our energy, and our money. So one of the roles of church leaders is to help people see the proper place of money in our lives and the potential reward in eternity when we invest our resources into eternal things.

Since God has five purposes for your life, He also has five funds for people to invest in – one for each purpose.

My mentor, Billy Graham, turned 95 years old this last November. One of the things Billy cared about most in his ministry was training local pastors, local evangelists and local church leaders.  In fact, three times I had the privilege of helping with that training at Amsterdam ‘84, Amsterdam ‘86 and also at Amsterdam 2000 where Billy personally selected and invited pastors from around the world for a week of intense practical training and the results were astounding.

It’s been almost 15 years since that last training and a new generation of pastors are ready to be equipped in evangelism, discipleship, ministry, worship and fellowship.  So in 2015, I’m going to host anALL-AFRICA PURPOSE DRIVEN Church Leadership Training Conference in the heart of the continent of Africa in Kigali, Rwanda.  Just like Billy Graham, we intend to select and financially sponsor the next generation of key Christian leaders from the 54 African nations to receive this week of training. If you’re interested in being a part of this history-making event, there are FIVE ways you can be involved:

  1. If you are a pastor in Africa who would like to be considered as a delegate from your country, I invite you click here to request an application.  Only about 10 leaders will be chosen from each country.

  2. If you are a leader in an African denomination, African fellowship of Churches or lead a network of churches in an African nation, I invite you to click here with any recommendations of pastors you think should be considered for invitation.

  3. If you are a Pastor in North America who has a heart for Africa and would be willing to team up with purpose-driven pastors of a single nation to serve and partner with them after the conference, click here.  We’re looking for 54 experienced, veteran purpose-driven pastors of North America to invite as representative to this conference in 2015 who will make a 5 year commitment to work with the ongoing training of pastors in a single African nation.

  4. If you are willing to be a sponsor for a pastor or delegation from an African nation to attend this training conference, we’d welcome your participation and generosity.  Or if you are willing and able to help us find partners to invest in this worthy Kingdom Event in Kigali, Rwanda, click here.

  5. Finally, we are looking for prayer warriors who will provide intercessory prayer support for each stage of the training:  First, we will need prayer for all the preparations.  Second, we'll need prayer during the conference itself, and THIRD, we'll need prayer for the 5-year implementation program of training in each nation AFTER the conference.  Click here if you’d like to pray for us.
I am trusting God to stir the hearts of pastors around the world in fulfilling the Great Commission and asking you partner with us!

Click here to register for the ALL AFRICA Training Conference.

God bless you!

Four Big Mistakes That Lead
to Ministry Burnout

One of the issues that we sometimes address here at pastors.com is the issue of ministry burnout. And when we do address it, the responses are overwhelming. It’s a big issue. Why do so many Pastors burn out in ministry? It’s because of faulty thinking. Our thinking controls our emotions and our emotions control the way we act.

The problem is, when we’re at an emotional low, we typically make four common mistakes. Next week I want to talk about how to overcome these emotions and prevent burnout, but today I want you to become aware of four of the most threatening internal causes of burnout in ministry.

This month, we are offering The Happiness Secret free with every purchase ofjust10. Thousands of years ago, God revealed the framework for life as it should be: simple values for daily living that provide the foundations of our laws, values and principles. In just10, I explore the Bible's stated design for our relationship with God, and with each other.

In the Beatitudes, Jesus provides us with a picture of the character of the true people of God. The Happiness Secret unpacks each of Jesus' great sayings and reveals how they are applicable in our lives today.

Can we encourage you to take up the offer and purchase copies both for yourself and as gifts for friends and family? We could mail them directly as a gift from you, if you wish.

Four Ways to Reverse
Ministry Burnout

I wrote last week about four big mistakes that lead to ministry burnout. One thing I love about the Bible is that it doesn’t just give us the causes of our problems in life. It gives us cures. When Elijah faced burnout in his ministry, God helped him do four things that are just as applicable to our lives today as they were in Elijah’s era.

If you are discouraged and on the verge of burnout, you’re depressed, or you’ve got the “blah’s”, and you want to be like Elijah and just run away from the responsibilities in your life, then you need to do these four things.

Charisma Is Optional: Character and Competence Are Required

One of the realities that has burdened me is the number of young leaders I see starting or moving into established churches who have tremendous talent and charisma, but who often lack the grounding of character. So in the last few years, I’ve been mentoring and teaching young leaders and addressing the need to put down roots and grow deep in the soil of God’s Word and in the history of the church. And for thirty plus years now, we’ve been addressing the issue of competence by repeatedly teaching pastors and church leaders how to plant and lead healthy churches that have a great commitment to the Great Commission and the Great Commandment.

You really need both character and skills to be a good leader. If you have character without competence what you have is sincere ineffectiveness. But far worse is when you have competence without character. If you have competence without character you become a menace – a menace to a church, a menace to a small group, and a menace to society.

The Fields Are Ripe For Harvest

12 June 2014

Hattie May Wiatt stood outside the small church from which she had been turned away. The church was full and was forced to turn people away at the door, including this little girl.

‘I can’t go to Sunday School,’ sobbed Hattie to the pastor as he walked past her. Taking her by the hand, the pastor took her inside the church and managed to find a place for her in the Sunday School class. Hattie was so delighted that they had found room for her, but that night as she went to sleep in her very humble, downtrodden accommodation, she couldn’t help thinking about all the other children who couldn’t go to Sunday School and learn about Jesus.

Two years later Hattie died. Her parents contacted the kind-hearted pastor who had befriended their daughter, to arrange the funeral. As they moved her body, they found a worn and crumpled red purse in her pocket. Inside the purse was 57 cents and a note, which read,

‘This is to help build the church bigger so more children can go to Sunday School.’

For two years she had saved her pocket money as a love offering. When the pastor tearfully read the note, he knew in an instant what he needed to do. Taking the note with him to church that Sunday, he told his congregation Hattie’s story; a short but sacrificial life of unselfish love, devoted to building the church and seeing more children introduced to Jesus. He challenged the church to consider how they might save money, so that together they could raise the funds needed for a larger building, to honour the vision that God had given Hattie and to which she had selflessly committed her life. The story does not end there.

A newspaper heard of the story and decided to publish it. The published article was read by a wealthy landowner who offered the church land to build on for 57 cents – the same amount that Hattie had saved. Church members made donations and gifts came from far and wide. Within five years, Hattie’s gift had increased to $250,000. As she had sown all she had, the fruit that followed was an abundant outpouring of funds.

The church today is called Temple Baptist Church in Philadelphia, with a seating capacity of 3,300. Thousands of students are educated there each year. They have built a hospital named The Good Samaritan Hospital and a Sunday School building which houses hundreds of children so no child will ever be turned away from Sunday School again. Within a room in the church is a picture of a little girl, whose 57 cents, so sacrificially given, caused a remarkable chain of events and made history. That little girl was Hattie May Wiatt.

Here at Philo Trust, we send a letter out once a year to ask if you would prayerfully consider supporting our ministry as we continue to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ in the UK and all around the world. We want to continue our work, and indeed increase our efforts and mission in this God-given calling. But we can only do so with your prayer and provision. Jesus said:

‘...I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.’(John 4:35)

We know from the many people we meet in person and the testimonies which come into our office each week, that the ministry of Philo Trust has helped introduce thousands of people to Jesus. In the sacrificial spirit of this moving story, would you consider donating £52 this year to our ministry, either as a one-off gift or as a monthly offering of £4 per month? If so, please follow one of the links provided below. If you currently partner with us, we thank you for supporting us and ask that you please continue to do so.

Some of you might be able to give more or consider including us in your Will, which would be enormously appreciated.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

J.John

Lead Better by Improving the Way You Communicate

You can’t lead a church, evangelize a community, or do business without communicating. And the better you become as a communicator, the better you become as a leader, and the better the team you lead becomes as a result. That means to get ahead you’ve got to continuallywork on your communication skills. Probably 75% of the problems we face, at home, at work, and at church are related to poor communication with family members, church members, your clients, or your coworkers. Poor communication is also the most frequently mentioned problem in marriage counseling.

To See Lives Transformed, Always Start with the Truth

As Pastors, teachers, and church leaders, it is our responsibility to instruct people in God’s truth and to set the example for what it looks like to apply God’s truth to every area of our lives. When you present God’s truth to God’s people for the purpose of life transformation, two things will happen. First, they will be moved to act on what they’ve heard, to become doers and not just hearers. Solomon said the words of wise men are “like goads” that move the will of people to align with truth. And secondly, they are like “well-driven nails.” In other words, when God’s truth is presented well, it finds a permanent place in the minds of its hearers.

As we lead our congregations forward spiritually, I believe there are several imperatives that will result in truly transformed lives.
