My God, my God, why have you forsaken me (Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34)

17 April 2014

The fourth statement from the cross is both deep and terrible. Mark puts it in its context as follows: ‘At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”– which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”’ Two things stand out: the intense universal darkness and the cry, so appalling that it was remembered by the first Christians in its original language of Aramaic.

Before we think about how Jesus prays it is worth noticing that, even in this darkest hour, Jesus does pray. Although in agony and in despair, he keeps faith. He was without sin to the last.

Yet it is how Jesus prays here that is most striking. As we were reminded in the first statement from the cross, ‘Father, forgive…’, Jesus normally addressed God with that word of close family trust, ‘Abba’ or ‘Father’. But here, in the midst of a darkness that mirrors his spiritual state, he is reduced to praying with the formal address of ‘God’.

Yes, it is a quotation from Psalm 22, but that cannot conceal a real sense of desolation and separation. No human being can understand fully what was going on here.

The best interpretation is that Jesus, united with the Father from all eternity, is now experiencing separation from God the Father.

Christians have seen in these appalling words the expression of the great principle of exchange that runs throughout the Gospel. On the cross, for those three hours, Jesus took upon himself our sin, became distanced from God the Father and bore the punishment that should have been ours.

To put it in terms of relationships, Christ’s separation as the Son of God allowed our adoption as children of God.

As St Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:21: ‘God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.’ Jesus went to a place of separation so that we might never need to be separated from God. He cried out these words of abandonment precisely to ensure that his followers should never have to say them.

The Easter Invitation: Calling People to Decide What to Do with Jesus

As I write this, millions of Christians and church leaders are getting ready for Easter weekend, and it’s a huge opportunity for the church to spring into action to invite and welcome lost people to hear the gospel. And so as we Pastors prepare to preach about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we desperately need the power of God – the same power that raised Jesus from the dead – to be at work in and through us.

The resurrection of Jesus was the greatest demonstration of the power of God in all of history. Let me explain why.

And in case you missed it, here's what I wrote last week...

Worship Leaders, Lead In
Awe This Easter!
By Dwayne Moore

One quiet morning a few weeks ago, I decided to take some time to pray alone in our sanctuary. But as soon as I sat down on the front row, my mind began racing about all the stuff that still needed to be done before our Easter services: “How will the lights be set?” “Where will the extra projectors be placed?” “How will we transition between the songs and videos?”

Then suddenly, a still small Voice broke through to my cluttered mind and said, “Dwayne, where’s the awe? Why can’t you simply be still and know that I am God? Here you sit in my presence; yet your attention is captivated by technical details. They’re important, but they’re secondary to your primary responsibility as worship leader. As you stand and lead all those people on Easter, the most important thing you can do is be in awe of me.”

It’s been a week unlike any other in the NSW Liberal Party’s history and so I wanted to take this moment to write to you.

The Hon. Barry O’Farrell MP was one of the greatest Premiers and leaders that our Party has ever had.

After the devastating election loss of 2007, he brought our Party together, inspiring members and voters across the state with his vision for NSW.

Under his strong leadership the Liberal & Nationals Coalition went on to record a historic unprecedented victory in the 2011 election, winning 69 seats.

Over the past three years, Mr O'Farrell and the Government have undertaken the mammoth task of rebuilding NSW after 16 years of Labor.  After more than a decade of neglect, the Liberal & Nationals Coalition led by Barry O’Farrell has invested in vital infrastructure projects like the North West Rail Link, WestConnex and NorthConnex, as well as boosting the number of frontline police, nurses and teachers.

His contribution to NSW is immeasurable and I thank him for his service and his dedication to the great people of this state.

Today we saw the Hon. Mike Baird MP elected as Premier and the Hon. Gladys Berejiklian MP as Deputy Leader of the NSW Liberal Party.

I congratulate them on their appointments and I look forward to working closely with them as the government gets on with the job of rebuilding NSW.

Mr Baird and Ms Berejiklian played an integral role in government over the past three years and I look forward to watching our state prosper under their strong leadership.

As we move closer to the 2015 election it’s important that we stand together and remember what it is that we are all fighting for.

In 2011 the people of NSW spoke loud and clear – they wanted strong leadership and a government that would fight for them.

The Liberal & Nationals Government has achieved a lot, but there is still more work to be done and we can’t do that without your help.

We need to remain united in our fight against Labor to ensure the people of NSW continue to get what they want – a Liberal & Nationals Government.

We know the fight won’t be easy, but I know that if we all stand together we will ensure victory in March 2015.

Thank you for your ongoing support and I take the opportunity to wish you and your family a Happy Easter.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Downy
State President

templemount riots
Israeli police have released footage of the clashes between Islamists and riot police on the Temple Mount this week. The video shows Muslim extremists hurling rocks and shooting firecrackers at police from inside the Al Aqsa Mosque complex on Judaism's holiest site. Temple Mount activists have condemned authorities for their conduct during the riots, which have taken place since the eve of Pesach (Passover), which started Monday evening, saying police were giving in to Islamist threats by banning Jews from the site in response to Muslim violence.
Israeli security officials said on Wednesday evening that they would ultimately have to force their way into al-Aqsa mosque, atop the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City, because hundreds of young Arab Palestinian men are now routinely stockpiling large quantities of rocks and slabs of stone there to attack security forces The unnamed officials, quoted by Israel’s Channel 2 news, were speaking hours after dozens of Arab Palestinian terrorist and an Israeli policeman were wounded on the Mount when clashes broke out soon after the holy site was opened to Jewish visitors on Wednesday morning.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Palestinians threw “stones and firecrackers” at police when they opened the walled compound’s gates. Police responded with stun grenades, Rosenfeld said, and closed the complex to the Jewish visitors after a small number had toured the site. An AFP correspondent at the scene said dozens of Palestinians were wounded by rubber-coated bullets and stun grenade canisters, and were staying inside the al-Aqsa mosque out of fear they would be arrested when leaving.
However, the Israeli security officials said young Palestinian men were being allowed to hide out in the mosque by the authorities from the Waqf, or Muslim Trust, that administers the site, and that they used the holy place as a stronghold for what have now become routine attacks on Israeli security forces. The officials were quoted saying that, sooner or later, there would be “no choice but to storm” the mosque. At the same time, they acknowledged that this is precisely what the Palestinian protesters hope will happen, since the sight of armed Israeli security personnel forcing their way into the third holiest site in Islam could prompt a surge in anti-Israeli protests throughout the Arab world.

WHEN IS JESUS COMING BACK?

Friends, when I recently posted a Bible verse with a picture of Monday night's blood I was NOT making a prediction about the timing of Jesus’ return. It would be foolish to do that. The color of the moon just reminded me of Acts 2:20.

The Bible clearly says that NO ONE can figure out the timing of Jesus’ return. It’s a waste of time. If fact, if anyone claims to know the date, you can be certain it WON’T occur on THAT date - because Jesus said “NO ONE knows the day nor hour it will happen!” In fact, Jesus admitted that even HE did not know the date of his return! (Only the Father knows.) It WILL happen someday , regardless of scoffers, but it is a waste of time trying to figure out the date. To attempt to figure out something that even Jesus admitted he didn’t know - is pure arrogance.

WHAT JESUS said: "NO ONE KNOWS that day or hour, not the angels in heaven, NOR EVEN THE SON HIMSELF, but only the Father know. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.” Matthew 24:36-37 (Everyone was caught by surprise in the days of Noah. They were just going about their normal work, not thinking of God.)

WHAT PAUL said: “When is all this going to happen? I can’t really say anything about that friends, for you know perfectly well that NO ONE KNOWS. That day of the Lord will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night.” 1 Thes. 5:1-2

If you are looking for a specific sign to happen before Jesus returns, here it is from Jesus himself: “This Gospel of my Kingdom (Good News) MUST FIRST be preached throughout the ENTIRE WORLD, as a testimony to EVERY NATION so EVERYONE hears it, and THEN FINALLY, the end will come.” Matthew 24:14

Jesus isn’t coming back until everyone he wants to hear the Gospel has heard it and had a chance to respond. The moment that last person accepts Christ (and God already knows who that person is) - then it’s over. We’re outta here.

SO... if you want Jesus to come back soon, forget trying to figure out when it will happen and start witnessing to your friends and taking the Good News to the 2,900 tribes that still have no Bible, no Believer, and no Body of Christ! In the PEACE Plan, we call this “The Final Frontier Project.” If you or you church wants to be a part of this, contact me about The PEACE plan and we’ll send you information. PastorRick@saddleback.com

It is interesting that the last topic the disciples wanted to talk about before Jesus ascended back to heaven was prophecy and future events, But Jesus changed the subject! . (Acts 1:6-8) Jesus was far more interested in evangelism and missions than prophecy! We should be too! Instead of teaching about “last things” Jesus changed the subject. Jesus essentially said “IT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS to figure out the future. INSTEAD I want you to go be witnesses to the entire world.” We should be focused on SHARING, not signs. He’d already given them the most important sign – the Gospel must be shared with everyone God wants in his family (Matthew 24:14)

ACTS: 1:5-6 says “The disciples asked Jesus, "Lord, WHEN are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" Jesus replied: "IT IS NOT FOR YOU TO KNOW (It’s none of your business!) the times or dates that the Father has set by his own authority. INSTEAD. you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and YOU WILL BE MY WITNESSES in Jerusalem, AND in all Judea and Samaria, AND to the ends of the earth."

Notice that our outreach in love to unbelievers is to be SIMULTANEOUS “Jerusalem (your home) AND Judea (your county/state/province) AND Samaria (to those of a different cultures who live by you) AND to the ends of the earth (every tribe and people group). We are to do this simultaneously- all at once, at the same time, not sequentially.

Many churches make the mistake of thinking this commission is sequential (‘then...then...then...) instead of simultaneous (“and... and... and” They want to reach their friend first, THEN their city, THEN other cultures their area, THEN finally go to the whole world. But that is the wrong strategy. Every church must be global and local AT THE SAME TIME. It is not a sin to be a small church but it is a sin to have a small vision. If you want Jesus to come back sooner, you must care about the whole world hearing the Good News, especially the Unengaged Unreached People Groups (UUPG). The gospel must be shared with EVERY tribe so that someone from each tribe is in heaven

St JOHN reported that in his vision of heaven “ I saw a great multitude which no one could count, standing before the throne of God. They were gathered from every nation, every TRIBE, every race, and every language.” Revelation 7:9 For that picture to be true, we still have about 2,900 tribes to share the Gospel with, so someone from that tribe will be in heaven. To learn how you can be involved, visit The PEACE Plan website: http://www.thepeaceplan.com/

THIS week, the best thing you can do is to bring someone to Easter service at your church! Also I encourage you to get your friends to watch my Easter message online “THE ANSWER IS EASTER.”
I’ve posted a 3 minute video you can pass on as an invitation here. It’s deeply personal: http://bit.ly/1ile6FOBless you all! Go reach the world!

Father God,I thank You for blessing me with everything I need to be successful in this life. I receive Your Word today which is truth and life to my soul. Help me keep my mind stayed on You as I meditate on Your goodness. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

You Are Already Blessed!
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ”
(Ephesians 1:3, NIV)

God has blessed you. Past tense — He’s already done it. Now, you may not feel blessed, you may not look blessed; in fact, all the circumstances may tell you that you’re not blessed. But you’ve got to be bold enough to say, “No, I see it right here in God’s Word — I am blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” The key is this: you have to believe it in order to receive it. You have to shake off those old mindsets by declaring God’s truth over your life. Truth sets you free. When you speak God’s truth that you are blessed, you will be free to believe it and free to receive it. Today, take hold of what belongs to you. Approach the day with an attitude of faith and victory knowing that you are already blessed. You are blessed,Amen.
=
You are a man/woman after His own heart.Whoever touches you, touches the apple of His eyes....
=
Let go of the past and choose to have an abundance mentality. Declare, This is not where I’m staying. I’m blessed. I’m prosperous. I’m headed to overflow; I’m headed to the land of More Than Enough according to His riches in glory. The Scripture says,“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”(Philippians 4:19, NIV)

His blessing is not according to what you have; it’s according to what He has. The good news is that God owns it all. One touch of God’s favor can blast you out of barely enough and put you into more than enough. God has ways to increase you beyond your normal income, beyond your salary, beyond what’s predictable. A big Amen.
=
PRAY.
Abba Father, You are so good. Thank You for Your unconditional love and grace towards me. Thank You for being faithful even when I fall short. Today I choose to rise up and believe that You are blessing me according to Your riches in glory in Jesus’ name. Amen.
=
PRAY.
Father in heaven, I humbly come to You. Show me any area of my life that I need to rise higher in. Give me the strength and courage to do everything with all my might so that I can honor You in all that I do. In Jesus´ Name. Amen.
=
ARE YOU DOING YOUR BEST TO IMPROVE?
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might (Ecclesiastes 9:10, NIV).
Are you being fruitful and productive right where you are today? Are you doing everything to the best of your ability? A lot of times we think, "As soon as I get a better job, then I´ll start working hard." "As soon as I get over this sickness, then I´ll cheer up, then I´ll have a good attitude." Or "As soon as my spouse changes, I´ll start working harder at my relationship."

But really, God wants us to do everything with all of our might no matter what the circumstances are. He wants us to become fruitful and productive today. He wants us to have a good attitude and do the right thing even when the wrong thing is happening to us.

See, we have to be faithful in the wilderness if we´re ever going to make it into our Promised Land. Remember, God is keeping the records. If you´ll keep doing the right thing with all your might, in spite of the circumstances, then you are sowing a seed for God to bring you up higher. You are opening the way for Him to bless and multiply you in every area of your life.Do your best with all your might.God bless you.
