President Obama has no excuse now to stop the Keystone XL Pipeline from being built in the United States.
His own State Department recently surprised many by releasing a report stating that the pipeline would not have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions, essentially debunking the opponents' argument against this project.
Many Democratic and Republican elected officials, trade unions and business groups support this project. Even the head of the AFL-CIO said, "We think that anything that's going to create jobs, help the country and do it in an environmentally sound way ought to be done."
We certainly agree on that point!
This pipeline will transport crude oil from the oil sands region of Canada to refineries in our country. And because it would connect the United States with a foreign country, a Presidential Permit needs to be issued by the State Department. First submitted in 2008, there have been plenty of studies and time for due diligence. We are now getting closer to reaching this important milestone.
We know that President Obama is keen on issuing Executive Orders -- well now there is one that we can all support!
The American Petroleum Institute projects that this pipeline will support 42,000 jobs with over $2 billion paid to workers. Other estimates go even higher but, either way, the point is this:
The Keystone Pipeline will create tens of thousands of good jobs and benefit thousands of hardworking families. In addition, think of the other industries and jobs created because of these workers. This will be a real boost to our economy.
If the White House stops this project, the oil will still be extracted and shipped by rail, but we won't be able to benefit from the jobs or the security that a pipeline provides.
Imagine the opportunity we will have to become closer to being energy independent because of this pipeline, especially important with the continued conflict in the Middle East. Our national security may depend on it!
This decision is now in the hands of President Obama.
The Pew Foundation reported that 65% of Americans support the Keystone Pipeline, but environmentalists are beside themselves, promising civic disobedience and doing whatever it takes to stop this. They are making their voice heard loud and clear to the White House, so let's do the same!
