Today the Finance Minister and I released the first thorough review of the Government’s finances since the election (MYEFO).
It found that Labor left $123 billion in deficits and $460 billion in gross debt within the next four years.
Without changes, the Budget will remain in deficit each and every year until 2023-24 and the debt will rise to $667 billion. This equates to $29,000 for each and every Australian. You can read the full document here.
We can’t go on like this and the Coalition won’t let it continue. We’ve successfully confronted Labor debt and deficit before, and we’ll do it again.
Today draws a line in the sand after six years of Labor.
The honest assessment of the Budget released today will be followed by the Commission of Audit findings in 2014 and the Coalition’s first Budget in May. All important steps in fixing the problems we have inherited.
The Coalition knows from experience that strengthening the economy and getting the Budget back on track are two related goals – because when you build a stronger economy, you improve the Budget.
That’s why we have a plan to do both. A stronger economy and a stronger Budget will mean that Australians can get ahead and plan their futures with confidence.
We are realistic about the task ahead. We know it’s not a short term problem. However, I am confident we have the plan to restore the Budget and build the strong, prosperous economy that our country needs.
