SPINNERS SPUN

Dreyfus’s comment, made earlier this week in conversation with 3AW’s Neil Mitchell, is yet to appear in the Attorney-General’s media feed.

THOSE TEA PARTY PEOPLE ARE EVERYWHERE
Tim Blair – Friday, April 26, 2013 (5:46am)
A radical roundup in the UK:
Three British Islamic extremists including a Muslim convert and a former police community support officer have been jailed for terrorism.Richard Dart, the son of teachers from Dorset, and his co-conspirators, Jahangir Alom and Imran Mahmood, were sentenced at the Old Bailey for engaging in conduct in preparation of acts of terrorism. They admitted the offence between July 2010 and July last year at a previous hearing last month.Dart was jailed for six years, Alom for four years and six months and Mahmood for nine years and nine months. Mr Justice Simon told the trio they held “radical Islamist beliefs and have shown yourselves to be committed to acts of terrorism”.
It always depends on Mahmood. Back in Boston:
The mosque attended by the two brothers accused in the Boston Marathon double bombing has been associated with other terrorism suspects, has invited radical speakers to a sister mosque in Boston and is affiliated with a Muslim group that critics say nurses grievances that can lead to extremism.Several people who attended the Islamic Society of Boston mosque in Cambridge, Mass., have been investigated for Islamic terrorism, including a conviction of the mosque’s first president, Abdulrahman Alamoudi, in connection with an assassination plot against a Saudi prince. Its sister mosque in Boston, known as the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, has invited guests who have defended terrorism suspects.
An interesting media shift took place during Boston’s terrorism coverage:
In all of cable, not just cable news, Fox News was the most-watched channel throughout all of last week …Once upon a time CNN was America’s news outlet when major news broke. Even as Fox has overtaken CNN in recent years, that dynamic would flip during major news events. Obviously, that is no longer the case.
Speaking of cases:
An escapee from a psychiatric institution slashed a rabbi and his son with a box-cutter on Tuesday, prompting witnesses to tackle and subdue the attacker after a chase through a Paris synagogue, officials said …The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which monitors anti-Semitic incidents worldwide, said in a statement that the assailant screamed “Allah-u-Akbar” — or “God is great” — during the attack.
That old line again?
The assailant was of Iranian origin, and an official investigation was underway to determine a possible motive …

Suggested name: “Skip”. Australian Sports Commission chairman John Wylie:
It could be through pay television, it could be through internet protocol television, it could be through public broadcasting. We’ll look at all distribution outlets for it. Fairfax has different rules for Jews
Andrew Bolt April 26 2013 (10:41am)
Fairfax newspapers have been very, very reluctant to mention the Boston bombers were Muslim:
More today:
So in the more than 6000 words filed by The Age on its live coverage thread by 8.30am on Saturday, the word “Muslim” was used just once: “The brothers are Muslims believed to be of Chechen origin, but there is still no clear motive for the attack.”But no hesitation today about naming the religion of an alleged perpetrator:
Uh huh.
“No clear motive”, even though by then we knew Tamerlan, the elder brother, named after a famous Muslim warrior, had called himself “very religious” and died with a bomb strapped to his chest.
Moreover, a YouTube account in his name was stuffed with videos of calls to jihad and homages to terrorism....
Same in yesterday’s Sunday Age editorial.
It mentioned the bombers were Chechen, but not that they were Muslim, adding: “It should be noted that information that emerged. . . didn’t fit into any neat profile, aside from the fact that the suspects were young adult males."…
Sydney’s Sun-Herald likewise dodged the “M” word in yesterday’s editorial: “Their mother said her elder son got involved in religion about five years ago and believed her sons were controlled by someone else.”
What religion was that? The editorial didn’t say, even though the bombers’ mother had: “[Tamerlan] talks about Islam a lot.”
Except this time the religion ain’t the religion:
Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said Donald Cornell, who was a bus driver at the Orthodox Adass Israel School in Elsternwick and Melbourne’s Yeshivah Centre, was charged with six counts of indecent assault on March 19… Chief executive of victim advocate group Tzedek Manny Waks said Mr Cornell, who is not Jewish...UPDATE

This reckless parental leave scheme must stop
Andrew Bolt April 26 2013 (10:24am)
Tony Abbott’s parental
leave system is absurdly generous, unfair, expensive and rortable. This
transfer of income to often well-off mothers - persuading them to
quickly dump babies with professional “carers” - is not only
questionable social policy, but cannot be justified when business is
under pressure and the government is out of money.
Adam Creighton:
Adam Creighton:
Employers are rightly alarmed about a scheme that forces 3000 big companies to pay 1.5 per cent more company tax:
The Coalition’s absurdly generous paid parental leave scheme, which would pay women earning up to $150,000 a year their full salary for six months, will cost taxpayers about $3 billion a year but do little to lift female workforce participation—its chief economic justification.
Any PPL scheme is meant to lift working women’s participation by allowing new mothers to take a sizeable break from work to look after their newborn without sacrificing their career. But this simplistic argument ignores the damaging incentives PPL creates and the prohibitive impact of childcare costs.
...the intention to return to the same place of work after six months is utterly unverifiable.
At worst, this means many women will have a strong incentive to lie to their employer and the government about their future intentions… For a woman earning $150,000 a year, honesty would cost a hefty $70,000, given mothers who do not get PPL would receive the $5000 baby bonus instead. Even if the policy included some token “pay back” clause for those who “change their mind”, would the government be bothered to try to get the funds back? Some mothers might have spent it, anyway…
Under PPL, all businesses will have an obligation to hold a woman’s job for up to six months. This is a considerable burden give the task of finding replacement staff or paying overtime to remaining staff. The frustration is compounded if a woman on PPL later changes her mind about returning to work.
The nation’s largest companies argue that a tax hike to fund the Coalition’s paid parental leave policy could cost them five to 10 times what they are currently paying for their own in-house schemes.Dennis Shanahan on the inequity:
Abbott’s team is not even convinced of the efficacy of his policy and the Nationals are particularly concerned at the appearance of giving $75,000 in parental leave for one baby and only $40,000 for another.

Spending us deeper into debt
Andrew Bolt April 26 2013 (9:24am)
This reckless spending must stop:
The Gillard government is set to leave a “large structural hole’’ in the federal budget that will need to be fixed with a massive one-off cut to spending or an unprecedented period of fiscal restraint, according to a report commissioned by the Minerals Council of Australia.(Thanks to reader Peter of Bellevue Hill.)
The findings, by modelling firm Macroeconomics, predict the Commonwealth’s headline cash deficit will widen from $11.6 billion this financial year to $14.3 billion in 2016-17 unless at least $15 billion is removed from the government’s current spending “base"…
It says unless governments rein in their outlays, the structural budget shortfall will be at 0.7 per cent of gross domestic product by 2024-25, about $10 billion in today’s dollars, before ballooning to 5.6 per cent, or $78 billion, by mid-century…
Labor is understood to be struggling to find ways of generating a surplus in any of the so-called “forward estimates” years, which run through to 2016-17, because revenue collections are at least $7.5 billion short of what was forecast six months ago. Market economists and budget experts are tipping a deficit for 2012-13 of $10 billion to as much as $25 billion.

Curry: less warming than predicted. Models seem wrong
Andrew Bolt April 26 2013 (8:58am)
Professor Judith Curry’s statement yesterday to a US House of Representatives subcommittee investigating global warming:
I am Chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology…(Bold added.)
If all other things remain equal, it is clear that adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere will warm the planet. However the real difficulty is that nothing remains equal…
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 4th Assessment report (IPCC AR4) published in 2007 made the following key statements...:
“Warming of the climate system is unequivocal… Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations… For the next two decades, a warming of about 0.2°C per decade is projected for a range of SRES emissions scenarios.”....However, since 1998 there has been no statistically significant increase in global surface temperature. While many engaged in the public discourse on this topic dismiss the significance of a hiatus in increasing global temperatures because of expected variations associated with natural variability, analyses of climate model simulations find very unlikely a plateau or period of cooling that extends beyond 17 years in the presence of
human-induced global warming…
An analysis provided by Ed Hawkins at the University of Reading compares the global average surface temperatures from the HadCRUT4 dataset with 20 models from the CMIP5 simulations. The comparison in Figure 3 shows that observations particularly since 2005 are on the low end of the envelope that contains 90% of the climate model simulations…
The IPCC’s attribution of the late 20th century warming has focused on external radiative forcing, and no explicit estimate of the contribution of natural internal variability to the warming was made. A recent paper by Tung and Zhou suggests that the anthropogenic global warming trends might have been overestimated by a factor of two in the second half of the 20th century…
The recent research on natural internal variability and black carbon aerosols, combined with ongoing plateau in global average surface temperature, suggests that the AR4 estimates of climate sensitivity to doubling
CO2 may be too high…
The IPCC AR4 conclusion on climate sensitivity is stated as:
“The equilibrium climate sensitivity . . . is likely to be in the range 2C to 4.5C [by the end of the century] with a best estimate of about 3C and is very unlikely to be less than 1.5C. Values higher than 4.5C cannot be excluded.”This estimate of equilibrium climate sensitivity is not easily reconciled with recent forcing estimates and observational data. There is increasing support for values of climate sensitivity around or below 2C.

It happens too often for Islam to be a coincidence
Andrew Bolt April 26 2013 (8:53am)
By sheer coincidence, the latest terrorists to be jailed in Britain are also Muslims:
And what is it about so many journalists that they refuse to report links between terrorist attacks and Islam?
ABC presenter Jonathan Green yesterday managed to write a column on the Boston bombers that not once mentioned they were Muslim:
Some things Green forgot to add about the elder bomber:
More things Green failed to add:
UPDATE
Dutch political leader Geert Wilders, vilified during his visit here this year, says what Green won’t:
More jumping to conclusions - but this time of the kind I doubt Green will mention:
Three British Islamic extremists including a Muslim convert and a former police community support officer have been jailed for terrorism. What is it about Islam that it moves so many followers to kill?
Richard Dart, the son of teachers from Dorset, and his co-conspirators, Jahangir Alom and Imran Mahmood, were sentenced at the Old Bailey for engaging in conduct in preparation of acts of terrorism. They admitted the offence between July 2010 and July last year at a previous hearing last month.

And what is it about so many journalists that they refuse to report links between terrorist attacks and Islam?
ABC presenter Jonathan Green yesterday managed to write a column on the Boston bombers that not once mentioned they were Muslim:
The bare facts: two bombs exploded, 10 or so seconds apart, the first about 2:49pm, on Boylston Street, Boston, near the finish line of the famous marathon. Three people were killed, while 264 others were injured. As a consequence one suspect was arrested, and another died in the course of a massive manhunt. The pair were Chechen brothers. The surviving suspect has been charged in a bedside hearing in hospital. His condition is now described as fair. That’s about it so far. That’s about it?
Some things Green forgot to add about the elder bomber:
Deceased Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was identified by a foreign government as a ”follower of radical Islam and a strong believer” whose personality had changed drastically in just a year, according to the FBI…
U.S. authorities acknowledged that an unnamed government had contacted the FBI to say the 26-year-old ethnic Chechen “had changed drastically” since 2010 and was preparing to leave the United States “to join unspecified underground groups,” according to an official statement from the FBI.
More things Green failed to add:
Tamerlan grew more confrontational in his religious beliefs. Ruslan Tsarni, the boys’ uncle, said he realized in 2009 that Tamerlan had changed and was spewing “this radical crap.” People who knew him say Tamerlan would express outrage when he perceived a religious slight and was critical of Muslim immigrants’ efforts to assimilate in the U.S…More that Green failed to mention about the bombers and their family:
At Friday prayers that month, Tamerlan stood up and challenged a sermon in which the speaker said that, just like “we all celebrate the birthday of the Prophet, we can also celebrate July 4 and Thanksgiving,” according to Yusufi Vali, a mosque spokesman…
Earlier, Tamerlan had attracted the attention of the FBI… Mrs. Tsarnaeva recalled her son saying. “He was even trying to get the FBI [agent] to convert to Islam.”
Appearing publicly for the first time outside her home in Makhachkala, Dagestan, Zubeidat said she believed her sons were set up…Yet more emerges:
”They were being killed just because they were Muslim, nothing else,” she told CNN…
She added, “And I don’t care if I am going to get killed too. And I will say Allahu akbar.”
No, don’t mention Islam. Unless, of course, you wish to present Muslims not as perpetrators but as victims:
The mother of Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev knew as early as 2011 that her son had been radicalized and sent text messages to family in Russia suggesting he was willing to die for Islam, the FBI told lawmakers this week according to two officials with knowledge of the Capitol Hill briefing.
Chloe Patton, post-doctoral researcher, University of South Australia, on ABC online’s The Drum yesterday:
BOSTON tragedy has another casualty now: Islam
The US Islamophobia industry has seized on the bombing to bolster its campaign of misinformation and fear-mongering, and we would do well to pay careful attention . . . While Muslims may not have faced as many random attacks on the street this time round, they remain fixed in the crosshairs of a multi-million-dollar industry dedicated to the sole purpose of hating them.
UPDATE
Dutch political leader Geert Wilders, vilified during his visit here this year, says what Green won’t:
NO, I was not surprised when the Tsarnaev brothers, the terrorists involved in last week’s Boston bombing, turned out to be Islamic radicals…UPDATE
Read the Koran and you will find the explanation. “Fighting is obligatory for you, much as you dislike it,” the Koran tells the faithful (2:216). In case anyone doubts what is meant by fighting: “I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, maim them in every limb!” (8:12).
And yet, most Western intellectuals, journalists and politicians keep declaring that the “true” Islam can be found in the occasional non-bellicose sentences of the Koran. “Islam is a religion of peace,” they say. And whenever adherents of this “religion of peace” blow up pressure cookers full of nails amid innocent bystanders, we hear that “they are not acting in accordance to Islamic teachings”.
I have spent almost a decade under round-the-clock police protection because of death threats…
People such as Feiz Mohammed, the Australian-born sheik of Lebanese origin, whose Islamic “sermons” inspired the Tsarnaev brothers, are not propagating a false Islam. They are propagating the Islam of the Koran and of Mohammed…
Three years ago, Feiz Mohammed issued an internet video in which he called for my beheading. I was, he said, “evil filth”. “Chop his head off,” he told his followers. I am threatened for the simple reason that I am an Islam critic. But, make no mistake, I am not the only one who is in danger. The Tsarnaev brothers drew inspiration from Feiz Mohammed’s internet rants and decided to kill innocent onlookers at a marathon. Everyone is in danger.
Following the Boston bombing, Australia’s Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said that Sheik Mohammed’s videos no longer represent his views… But I do not share this optimism… I have not heard the sheik recall his demand for my beheading…
In my view, the cause is Islam’s inherent violent and intolerant nature. I always make a distinction between Muslims and Islam. Most Muslims are moderate, but this does not mean that there is such thing as a moderate Islam.
More jumping to conclusions - but this time of the kind I doubt Green will mention:

Women at the back: Giving in to Islam at Melbourne Uni
Andrew Bolt April 26 2013 (8:27am)
In principle, we should be free to associate as we choose.
The Left is furious when private clubs exercise that freedom. From four years ago:
The Left is furious when private clubs exercise that freedom. From four years ago:
Private clubs enjoy an automatic exemption from anti-discrimination laws and are free to restrict membership on attributes including gender. But when a certain faith insists on segregation in public buildings.... well, go right ahead:
Attorney-General Rob Hulls has indicated he would like to change the situation when state cabinet considers a rewrite of the Equal Opportunity Act, passed in 1995.
Major changes up for consideration include ending the automatic exclusion for private clubs and allowing the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission to initiate its own anti-discrimination actions.
One Leftist, at least, is consistent in her beliefs:
THE University of Melbourne has declined to condemn gender segregation at public events held by Islamic organisations at its Parkville campus…
On April 13, a lecture entitled “Islamic rulings on Jihad in Syria & why great scholars’ silence” (sic) was held in the university’s Copland Theatre by Islamic education organisation Hikmah Way.
At the entrance to the lecture, attended by The Australian, signs directed “sisters” to the back of the theatre, and “brothers” to the front. Asked whether seating was segregated, a male attendee said: “It usually is here, yeah."…
Gender segregation was also encouraged at an information session for prospective Australian Islamic Peace Conference volunteers held by the Islamic Research and Educational Academy at the university’s Public Lecture Theatre on March 10.
The Australian understands the practice has been encouraged at many similar events held at the university in recent years.
On Tuesday, the university was made aware of these events and asked about its policy on gender equality and whether it would consider prohibiting gender segregation at events held on campus.
A spokeswoman said yesterday the lecture had been held by a non-university organisation and run as an external event.
University of Melbourne gender politics professor Sheila Jeffreys said she was shocked to learn that this “form of subordinating women” was taking place on an Australian university campus.Others, though...:
“There needs to be great outrage about this,” Professor Jeffreys said. “It is a Rosa Parks moment . . . Making women sit at the back in lecture theatres is sexual apartheid…
“Religious ideas that so blatantly make women into second-class citizens are not worthy of respect...”
Professor Jeffreys said the events at the University of Melbourne were part of a “wider trend” that was seeing women’s equality rights eroded under the mantra of religion and culture, even at the level of the UN.
University of Melbourne student union women’s officers Amy Jenkins and Mercedes Marsh declined to comment until they had the opportunity to meet with their Women of Colour Caucus on Wednesday.(Thanks to reader Gab.)

How dare you celebrate what unites
Andrew Bolt April 26 2013 (8:13am)
Yet another complaint that Australians are embracing Anzac Day as a much-needed symbol of unity. This time it’s an ABC reporter channelling an academic:
Wright, of course, belongs to the instantly-dated Derrida generation of tricks-with-words academics trading in divisive identity politics. Just the titles of her works tell the story:
We talked about this on 2GB last night.
(Thanks to reader Ian.)
Historian Clare Wright says that her sense is that “Anzac Day has grown in appeal in inverse proportion to the confidence about our common identity”.Damn Australians for choosing celebrate unity and sacrifice. Damn them for pushing back against the modish forces of division and complaint.
“What we saw in the Howard era,” she says, “was that Anzac Day became used as a political opportunistic tool for rallying the nation behind a particular version of Australia’s history. And the problem with that is that unless we invest Anzac Day with the historical complexity that it deserves, the whole day risks becoming a sideshow - a circus.”
Wright argues that Anzac Day has grown so much that it is now overshadowing other important days in Australian history such as Eureka and Federation, and that some of the complexity of the time - the way the war tore apart the nation, the bitter debates over conscription that ripped apart the social and political fabric of the nation - have been lost in an increasingly jingoistic commemoration that too often recently has bordered on celebration - particularly among the enthusiastic young crowds that now flock to Anzac Cove every year.
Wright, of course, belongs to the instantly-dated Derrida generation of tricks-with-words academics trading in divisive identity politics. Just the titles of her works tell the story:
Wright, C 1999, ‘Why Fanny Power, Ida Beer and Susan Hussey Didn’t Join the VULVA: The Politics of Pub-lic Housekeeping’, in Images of the Urban: Conference Proceedings, ed. C McConville & L Finch. Sunshine Coast University Press. But is her complaint about Anzac Day part of a new push by the Left?

A leader of true convictions
Andrew Bolt April 26 2013 (7:53am)
A good man opens his presidential library:
“In the end, leaders are defined by the convictions that they hold,” Bush said as he grew serious. His chief conviction, he said: “The United States of America must strive to expand the reach of freedom.”This part of the library seems useful:
Future generations, he said, are “going to find out that we stayed true to our convictions,” that his administration raised school standards, lowered taxes, liberated nations from dictatorships and “made the tough decisions required to keep the American people safe.”
He teared up as he concluded his remarks. “It was the honor of a lifetime to lead a country as brave and as noble as the United States,” he said, and he believes its best days lie ahead.
There’s an interactive video exhibit called Decision Points Theater that gives players chances to compete against each other by second-guessing or affirming Bush’s decisions about Iraq, Hurricane Katrina and the 9/11 terrorist attacks by weighing arguments for or against them that are delivered by actors. In his often ungracious essay on the conservative Rudyard Kipling, George Orwell offered one important truth that seems aposite:
He identified himself with the ruling power and not with the opposition. In a gifted writer this seems to us strange and even disgusting, but it did have the advantage of giving Kipling a certain grip on reality. The ruling power is always faced with the question, ‘In such and such circumstances, what would you DO?’, whereas the opposition is not obliged to take responsibility or make any real decisions. Where it is a permanent and pensioned opposition, as in England, the quality of its thought deteriorates accordingly.

SEVERAL hours before Ben Zygier killed himself in Israel’s most secure prison cell, the alleged Mossad spy had a meeting with his wife that put him into a state of “turmoil”, a review of his case has revealed.
His wife had conveyed “a difficult message” to her husband at the meeting, which may have had “a severe impact on his state of mind”.
The review, however, does not reveal what the “difficult message” was.

This song, sung by a gospel singer and a chorus of people attending Reverend Dexter's sermon, is a real song based on biblical text (Revelation 6:15-17).
No hiding place, down here
No hiding place
There's no hiding place
Down here
No hiding place
And they went to the rock to hide their face
But the rock cried out
No hiding place
There's no hiding place
Down here
And the sinners are gonna be running
At the knowledge of their fate
They'll run to the rocks and the mountains
But their prayers will be too late
They forgot about Jesus
Not knowing the end was near
At the end they'll try to find a hiding place
When it comes their time to die
No hiding place in the mountains
No hiding place in the waters
No hiding place
Down here
No hiding place
And they went to the rock to hide their face
But the rock cried out
No hiding place
There's no hiding place
Down here
Can't you see old gambler running
Saying 'Lord, save my soul'
Saying 'Lord, Lord, have mercy, won't you save my soul'

I went to the rock to hide my face

The Parliament of Dreams
Sung by G'Kar while he's preparing dinner.
A slightly different version of the song appears in the episode Convictions.
I'm thinking of thinking of calling her right
after my afternoon nap.
I'm thinking of thinking of sending her flowers,
right after Bonnie gets back.
So many fishies left in the sea,
so many fishies - but no-one for me...
I'm thinking of thinking of hooking a love,
soon after supper is done.

…do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.—Lk 12:22
In the midst of bad news of economic downturns, financial crises or rising unemployment, it's easy to feel fearful or discouraged.
What does God, your heavenly Father, say about all these worries and concerns? He simply tells us this: Do not worry. He knows our concerns and what we need, and He will provide.
Beloved, your heavenly Father doesn't want you to provide for yourself out of strive. He wants you to know that He is the one who will provide these things that you need. So be at rest and receive His supply in every single area of your life! http://josephprince.com/
