Searching for Family in Australia

Searching the Registry’s historical indexes on our website is free. Each search result will give you the first name, surname and the district of the event, along with a unique registration number that identifies each record.

You can search and order birth, death or marriage certificates over the Registry’s website, as long as the date of the event occurs in the following time period:

Births: - Event must take place prior to 1910.
Deaths: - Event must take place prior to 1980.
Marriages: - Event must take place prior to 1960

No ID is required to obtain certificates for these records, but you must submit a family history application form (link attached).

The Registry will be updating records on a yearly basis, so some records will be unrestricted, but will not appear on the indexes until the next update.

If you supply the Registration Number on your application, you will receive a discounted fee, as the Registry does not have to search for the record. The Registration Number can be obtained by conducting a search on the Historical Indexes.

Standard Birth, Death and Marriage Family History CertificatesStandardUrgent
With Registration Number$29.00$50.00
Without Registration Number$39.00$60.00

If you require the Registry to conduct a search for you, you must provide the surname, first name, date and place of birth, death or marriage as well as any other relevant details. If you don’t know when the birth, death or marriage occurred, you can nominate a 10-year period for the Registry to search. If the date you have given is incorrect, we will search up to 5 years either side of the date.

Restricted Access

Any records that fall outside the aforementioned years of access are confidential, and require that you submit an application form and supporting ID to establish your legal entitlement.

I have also included a list of other Australian family history resources that may be helpful to you. If you require any further assistance, please contact us or visit our website at www.bdm.nsw.gov.au.
