There are lots of ways to celebrate. There are fun parks and rides. Gardens and walks. Take in the views. Have a bbq, and cook some lamb. Honor Australians who have done wonderful things.
But not everything that is done is edifying and wholesome.
Some get drunk and or take drugs. Some media, in the hunt for a news story, scent blood with the honest answers they have gotten from Liberal leader Mr Abbott over virginity that they must ask other Liberals their opinion. Rudd's nephew marches in a Klu Klux Klan uniform to protest racist acts against Indians. Some don't go to work, some are paid extra to work. Some work for no pay. I like to spend time with my friends, doing things I like. The assumption being that friends like to do those things.
I'm chagrined by the media and public response to Mr Abbott's reasonable statement that he believes virginity is a gift that unmarried people should aspire to. Alternative views are actually pretty difficult to defend, but the press might not probe too deeply if they are asking an ALP man. Mr Pyne is not ALP, however, and so is fair game.
Many thanks to Iraq for executing a brutal killer on this day. Maybe that kind of patriotism should be looked for and admired in Australia, where people have died for a flag that the ALP despise.
