A thirteen year old girl has made a life choice. Not all that unusual, they do all the time, and much younger too. Life choices like who to play with and what is important to them.
But this girl's life choice is much harder than the average. She is deciding that she will die of one thing, because she fears of dying from another .. and the pain inherent with the other way.
Some say that a heart attack is preferable to cancer. But is it preferable to life?
I knew a thirteen year old girl who gave up once. She had had a transplant and the result went awry. Kerry Packer gave up recently, but he was an old man with a rich legacy.
It may well be that this girl would die in surgery, or get cancer again as a result of the surgery.
We are lying to ourselves if we think that an erudite young girl can know what she is giving up.
