It is also a great day because, as the Prime Minister has said, after 107 years our 25th Governor-General is finally a woman.

What we did over 11 and a half years, as you know, we paid off close to $100 billion in Commonwealth debt. We took Australia from debt and deficit budgeting to one now where people expect there to be a surplus. In addition to that we left more than $60 billion invested in Australia’s future. And we managed a very strong terms of trade with the resources and commodities boom over the last seven years; we managed that still keeping inflation between the two to three per cent band. And we got unemployment down to the lowest level in 34 years.

Rudd refuses to confirm the number of services jobs lost under Labor
