Headlines Wednesday 10th September

Not every hypocrite is on the Left
Andrew Bolt

Jon Stewart pings Karl Rove beautifully in his defence of Sarah Palin’s experience. Bill O’Reilly is caught switching hobby horses, too.

The witch made them do it
Andrew Bolt
Tim Blair notes how The Age’s Anne Davies casually regurgiates another foul smear against Sarah Palin that’s actually been discredited. This time it’s the claim that Palin allegedly said of Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton: “So Sambo beat the bitch.”

Hail Gough Whitlam, chief hillbilly
Andrew Bolt

America’s Left clearly doesn’t worship Gough Whitlam the way our own feels he deserves. Here’s The Huffington Post’s Adam McKay in a panic attack:

This is it folks. If McCain takes power we fade and become Australia in the seventies: a backwoods country with occasional flashes of relevance.

Saving the wails in the deep forest
Andrew Bolt
Join an open-air mass of the new faith, led by priests of Earth First.

Switch off, or the possum gets it

Beautiful Sunset
What fear campaign? What emotional blackmail? What wild exaggerations?

From the Victorian Education Department’s Classroom Energy Monitor Checklist:

Turn off the following:

Lights
Computers
Heaters
Fans
Air Conditioners
Printers

What happens if you don’t do it?

The Mountain Pygmy Possum is so cute! It’s also not happy! Heating up the earth with greenhouse gases will melt all the snow where it likes to live.

Hmm. Either these preachers are stretching the truth or a lot of scared energy monitors are turning off a lot of lights, because in the real world…

The state has had its coldest winter in 10 years and snow is expected to continue to fall in alpine areas this week as spring begins. Snow was falling on Mt Buller yesterday afternoon and was expected to continue in the evening.... The snow season has been extended to October 5 on the mountain.

Climate scientists demand pain for no gain
Andrew Bolt
Climate alarmists demand we pay even more to achieve no good at all:

AUSTRALIA’S most respected climate scientists have condemned the advice of greenhouse adviser Ross Garnaut and urged the Federal Government to take a more aggressive position at global climate change negotiations....
===
Hands off the car … and give us the dam
Andrew Bolt
Bernard Salt checks the projections of the Australian Bureau of Statistics:

On this trajectory the ABS has Melbourne overtaking Sydney as this nation’s largest city in 2039… Instead of Melbourne adding a city the size of Perth over 50 years, the new outlook suggests that it will be more like a Perth-plus-an-Adelaide.
===
Clinging to a sense of belonging
Andrew Bolt
It certainly seems wrong, even ugly and divisive, yet the concerns that produced it cannot safely be trampled over:

The Camden residents’ group that fought a Muslim society’s proposal for a school in rural Camden has welcomed a Catholic organisation’s plans to build a school nearby because “Catholics are part of our community”.
===
The golden years
Andrew Bolt
A happy Alexander Downer sums up the Howard Government’s legacy:

We went through a golden era economically. There’s no doubt that the Howard years will always be remembered for that and I think the Howard years will always be remembered for building Australia’s confidence in itself ... From a country that was pleading to be accepted in its own neighbourhood to the point where it was almost embarrassing, and a country that was debating its identity, to a country that is embraced in its own neighbourhood as a significant albeit occasionally controversial contributor to the neighbourhood and a country that is proud of its identity and understands its place in the world.

Maybe praising Palin might hurt her instead
Andrew Bolt
John McCain has had not so much a bounce, but a trampoline. Real Clear Politics’ poll of polls shows a complete turnaround in his campaign since he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Palin, of course, brings qualities or her own. What’s more, her pick reflects on McCain’s own values and judgements - and in this case positvely. But the Wall Street Journal’s Brian M. Carney suggests another important factor - that Palin has lured the Left, especially in the media, to expose its worst:

Rasmussen has a new poll out that suggests that piling on Mrs. Palin may do more to harm the media’s own image than hers.
===
Rudd’s real climate change
Andrew Bolt
It seems the economy won’t give us great joy over the next few years, which is not going to help the unfortunate Rudd Government much, either:

The Reserve Bank governor yesterday spelled out a soft landing scenario that would allow him to cautiously continue reducing official interest rates and get inflation back under 3 per cent during the next three years. But it would be an extended period of below-average growth, in part making up for five years or more of excess.
