Headlines Thursday 31st July

Icy reality cools the climate cultists
Piers Akerman
DAILY, new evidence emerges to demonstrate that Climate Minister Penny Wong is wrong.

The latest blow to the Government’s apocalyptic prophet is news from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute that there is more ice than normal in the Arctic waters north of the Svalbard archipelago.

According to the Barents Observer there are open areas in this area in most years during July - but this year the area is covered by ice.

A fortnight ago a Norwegian research ship, Lance, and a Swedish ship, MV Stockholm, got stuck in the ice in the area and needed to be freed by the Norwegian Coast Guard.

While one ice floe does not amount to a mini-ice age, the dramatic evidence runs counter to the mantra of the climate warming cult which has claimed the Arctic is becoming progressively free of ice.

The mantra of less ice has long been coupled with the warning that rising sea levels will soon swamp coastal areas and both claims have been used to heighten fears about climate change and add a greater sense of urgency to calls for action now.

It follows last week’s revelation from leading US hurricane expert Kerry Emanuel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that even in a dramatically warming world hurricane frequency and intensity may not rise during the next two centuries.

Once again real time events and science have defeated Senator Wong and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, despite their constant refrain that human-induced climate change is already occurring and we must act now to protect our prosperity and way of life.

Not only do eminent and vastly more knowledgeable scientists say otherwise, they point out that if the Earth is to warm (naturally) by even one degree and if carbon dioxide levels increase, we will be better off, not worse off.

Voight blasts Obama
Andrew Bolt
Jon Voight must have retired from Hollywood to dare write this:

If Mr. Obama had his way, he would have pulled our troops from Iraq years ago and initiated an unprecedented bloodbath, turning over that country to the barbarianism of our enemies. With what he has openly stated about his plans for our military, and his lack of understanding about the true nature of our enemies, there’s not a cell in my body that can accept the idea that Mr. Obama can keep us safe from the terrorists around the world, and from Iran, which is making great strides toward getting the atomic bomb. And while a misleading portrait of Mr. Obama is being perpetrated by a media controlled by the Democrats, the Obama camp has sent out people to attack the greatness of Sen. John McCain, whose suffering and courage in a Hanoi prison camp is an American legend…

This is a perilous time, and more than ever, the world needs a united and strong America. If, God forbid, we live to see Mr. Obama president, we will live through a socialist era that America has not seen before, and our country will be weakened in every way.

No water. No power. No cars
Andrew Bolt
Strange, but I don’t see world peace and a cure for all cancer on the list:

The Future Melbourne plan was developed by a reference group for the City of Melbourne municipality… hopes to increase the proportion of workers commuting to the CBD without cars from 72 per cent to 90 per cent… It proposes reducing residential greenhouse gas emissions by 35 per cent per capita by 2020 from 2000 levels… This would include slowing down traffic to 30km/h to make streets safer for cyclists… One of the 152 targets in the plan is to have a 24-hour stimulating and safe city...

Gas on about that clean coal

When our politicians swear we can have “clean coal” technology that will slash our emissions without pain, they are thinking of a dream that just died in New York.

Humble candidate Barack Obama—He bows to nobody in his understanding of this world!—piles on the modesty:
I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.

NAMES REPULSIVE
Tim Blair
Stu H., a leading figure in the Australian Media Reform Movement, writes:
Tim Blair and Andrew Bolt...Even their names repulse me. “No, they’re not not Journos!” I scream, to anybody that cares. In fact they’re far worse. They’re right wing columnists at Murdoch’s Sydney’s Daily Telegraph and Melbourne’s Herald Sun respectively. Nothing seems sacred for these two men ...

According to opinion polls and word on the streets, if the November US presidential elections were to be decided by non-Americans, Democratic Party candidate Barack Obama would beat the Republican’s John McCain with about 90 per cent of the vote.

Petrol on Rudd’s FuelWatch fire
Andrew Bolt
I hope the personal reasons aren’t serious - not as serious as the resignation is for a Government that doesn’t need more attention on its spinning on petrol prices:

AUSTRALIA’S first petrol commissioner has resigned less than three months after taking on the job of holding retailers to account.

Bangladesh growing, warming hype receding
Andrew Bolt
Al Gore wept for the people of Bangladesh, millions of whom would be made homeless - he claimed - as global warming caused rising seas that would drown their low-lying country.

Small problem. Bangladesh is not sinking, but growing:

New research shows Bangladesh may not be as vulnerable to rising sea levels caused by climate change as previously feared, scientists in Dhaka say.

They say satellite images show the country’s landmass is actually growing because of sediment dumped by rivers.

It’s not just the cooling that contradicts the IPCC
Andrew Bolt
Christopher Monckton, in between tearing Gavin Schmidt of RealClimate to bits, lists all the climate changes the IPCC’s alarmist global warming models failed to predict:

The models had not projected the current multidecadal stasis in “global warming”: no rise in temperatures since 1998; falling temperatures since late 2001; temperatures not expected to set a new record until 2015 (Keenlyside et al., 2008). Nor (until trained ex post facto) did they predict the fall in TS from 1940-1975; nor 50 years’ cooling in Antarctica (Doran et al., 2002) and the Arctic (Soon, 2005); nor the absence of ocean warming since 2003 (Lyman et al., 2006; Gouretski & Koltermann, 2007); nor the behavior of the great ocean oscillations (Lindzen, 2007), nor the magnitude nor duration of multi-century events such as the Mediaeval Warm Period or the Little Ice Age; nor the decline since 2000 in atmospheric methane concentration (IPCC, 2007); nor the active 2004 hurricane season; nor the inactive subsequent seasons; nor the UK flooding of 2007 (the Met Office had forecast a summer of prolonged droughts only six weeks previously); nor the solar Grand Maximum of the past 70 years, during which the Sun was more active, for longer, than at almost any similar period in the past 11,400 years (Hathaway, 2004; Solanki et al., 2005); nor the consequent surface “global warming” on Mars, Jupiter, Neptune’s largest moon, and even distant Pluto; nor the eerily-continuing 2006 solar minimum; or the consequent, precipitate decline of ~0.8 °C in surface temperature from January 2007 to May 2008 that has canceled out almost all of the observed warming of the 20th century.

Labor’s judge makes usual suspect happy
Andrew Bolt
Attorney General Robert McClelland yesterday assured us that his pick as Chief Justice for the High Court was “a black letter lawyer” who stuck by the letter of the law. In other words, he wouldn’t be reinterpreting the law wildly in favor of the Left. So why is Richard Ackland today gloating?

But this is not what Justice (Robert) French thinks he is. If you travel to a little talk he gave at this year’s constitutional law conference in Sydney you’ll see he has other ideas.

The title of his paper was “Judicial Activists - Mythical Monsters?” and he was speaking in reply to Janet Albrechtsen, a newspaper columnist who ... frequently sounds the alarm about the evils of judicial activism. Justice French declared it to be “a meaningless rubric”.

China censors, IOC already buckling
Andrew Bolt
If you give the Olympics to a totalitarian giant, it’s no good later claiming you’re surprised when it acts like ... a totalitarian:

COMMUNIST officials have outraged the International Olympic Committee and the world’s media by barring unfettered access to the internet - reneging on a key pre-Games promise to open China’s doors to the world…

International media were yesterday unable to access websites connected to the Falun Gong, Amnesty International or the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Dam Flannery wrong again
Andrew Bolt
Alarmist of the Year Tim Flannery seized on Perth’s falling dam levels to flog his global warming scare:

Perth will become a ghost city within decades as rising global temperatures turn the wheatbelt into a desert and drive species to the brink of extinction, a leading Australian scientist warns.

The Age misreads ice sheets and Turnbull
Andrew Bolt
The Age wants the Liberals to get a new leader who is more in line with its global warming hysteria, after Brendan Nelson’s attempt to harden his line against Labor’s emissions trading scheme was defeated by his shadow cabinet :

This week’s defeat for Dr Nelson is unarguably a win for leadership contender Malcolm Turnbull.

So was Bob Hawke
Andrew Bolt
Arrogance is an overrated vice in a politician, so there’s little comfort for the Liberals in an article headlined ”Likeable Rudd growing arrogant”:

Before the election, Mr Rudd was seen as only half as arrogant as Mr Howard. In March, he was seen as much less arrogant than Dr Nelson, only 33 per cent considering him arrogant against Dr Nelson’s 48per cent. Last weekend, Mr Rudd’s arrogance rating rose 10 points to 43 per cent, while Dr Nelson’s fell six points to 42 per cent.
