AUSTRALIA’S frontline troops are badly overstretched, with half of the army’s infantry and light armoured cavalry committed to Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor, Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon has warned.

Does the Rudd Government need our cavalry to be charging through Sydney instead? Does it plan to invade New Zealand? This is like complaining that doctors are overstretched because most are working in our hospitals.

Australians arming terrorists

The Wall Street Journal reports on the intercepted communications of a far-Left Venezuelan terrorist group that should be of urgent interest to our authorities:

In January 2007, the rebels penned a memo explaining that a Venezuelan general told them that arms shipments from abroad could be brought in through the Venezuelan port of Maracaibo. By September, the shipments were being lined up.

“Yesterday I received two Australian arms suppliers,” one rebel wrote to the high command, “thanks to a contact made through Ramiro [a Salvadoran.]” The Aussies “offer very good prices on all we need.” The list includes 50-caliber machine guns, sniper rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and missiles. “All of these materials are made in Russia and China,” he wrote, and the shipment would take a month or so “to arrive in Venezuela.”
The same records have outed an Australian Greens candidate:

A Chilean-born candidate for the Australian Greens,Vlaudin Vega, has admitted to supporting a Colombian guerilla group listed as a terrorist organisation.

Computer files captured from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) acknowledge the “special support” in Australia of “Vlaudin” …

Asked about FARC and its cocaine trade, Mr Vega said: “The revolutionary process needs money.’’
