Shadow Minister for Finance Peta Seaton said today the continued slump in car sales in NSW showed the state economy was stalled with Premier Iemma asleep at the wheel.

ABS trend figures released today show new car sales in NSW have slumped 5.9% on the same period last year and are at the lowest point since February 2003.

  1. This translates to 1,535 fewer cars sold in NSW in May this year compared with last year.

"The NSW economy is stalled and if the Premier still hasn't been able to find first gear after nine months, I doubt he ever will," Ms Seaton said.

"This is just another example of the struggling NSW economy," she said.

"It shows families and businesses have nothing left to spend on new cars after paying Morris Iemma's exorbitantly high state taxes.

"After paying payroll tax, higher insurance taxes, stamp duties, and tolls, small businesses have nothing left for a new car.

"The same applies to families crippled with mortgages, registration, and insurance.

"NSW has the slowest economic growth in the country, with the highest taxes and above average unemployment.

"Premier Iemma is incapable of kickstarting the NSW economy.

"We just need to get on and fix NSW," Ms Seaton said.
